Growing garlic

I stuck some garlic cloves in a pot outside last autumn/winter time. They sprouted only a couple of inches and then seemed to disappear again (probably the wrong time of year - too early?). I gave them up as a failure and forgot about them. When I was outside yesterday, I noticed some lovely green shoots growing from the pot - I wonder if some of those over-wintered cloves have started growing again. I wouldn't have though that could happen, since all five already sprouted last year - but who knows?
I think I'll have to give it a bit of a prod to see what's going on beneath the surface next time I'm out there.Sealed Pot Challenge 5 - #1742 :j0 -

I planted it about 3 weeks ago and there are some largish shoots come up. I just want to know when to pull it up as I don't want to pull it up too early. I know its probably not ready yet but i'm a beginner - i need all the help i can get0

Don't even think of pulling it yet..........the green shoots show that it has taken and is growing. I wait until the green bits go yellow to pull them out - but an experienced gardener will be along in a bit with better advice.0

I'm more concerned that it is growing at all - garlic cloves are far easier to raise - try planting those instead of bread based products.
baah I'm sure that read garlic bread at the top of the post... I'm going mad... must have been the pizza at lunch!Tim0 -
There's a old wives tale about planting it on the shortest day and lifting it on the longest da.
I planted mine after the shortest day and the longest day has just passed. I was eager to see what I have and I had tiny bulbs.
Keep with it and maybe you'll have some towards the end of the year - weather permitting
Good luck

Hi,
I don't profess to being much of a gardener either, however we did harvest a good crop of garlic this year (Our first). We planted it in October & over wintered it, picking it in late May/June. As you can see its about 8 months. I guess that the process is speeded up in the summer months.
The plant tips go beige/brown & this progresses down the plant. When approx 75% is this colour, probably a bit more, they are ready.
Pull them up & hang them to dry out. Using your fingers you can then rub the exces dirt off them & you have your own Garlic.
Do a search on previous posts. I seem to remember getting a link from off here that was ever so useful.
Hope you get a good crop.

Sorry for being a bit thick here, but did you just plant cloves of garlic in a plant pot & it'll grow new garlic bulbs?0

Thanks for asking that mandy_moo , I was reluctant to look an utter twit on my own!! Let's hope someone answers soon. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0

Yes I think so - I have yet to try this myself. The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0
