My understanding is that if you plant a garlic bulb you get a garlic onion. If you then store that for a year and replant, THEN you get garlic bulbs.

That said, the garlic onions are very tasty. Like spring onions, but with a strong garlic flavour.

Sorry for being a bit thick here, but did you just plant cloves of garlic in a plant pot & it'll grow new garlic bulbs?

You take a whole bulb of garlic and split it into cloves - there are probably 10-12 cloves per bulb.

Plant one clove and it will grow into a new bulb. So each clove produces another 10-12 cloves.

However .... as Greenwellies said ... you normally plant the garlic clove around December 21 and harvest it around June 21.

The best time to plant garlic cloves is in the autumn (October) for harvesting the following summer. I think garlic needs a cold snap to tell it that the season's changed and therefore the new summer is approaching - this tells them to grow.

Planting cloves from shop bought garlic can be OK - but is a bit hit & miss. Also, they are not treated, so can be susceptible to disease. Worth a try though.

If you haven't got garlic in the ground now, best to wait until October then plant some, which will give you a harvest next summer.

    HTH

Hi, I don't know if you can do that, but outside is the place, plant just like a bulb, dig a small hole with a trowel, about 3 inches down, put bulb in and cover over.

    Thats it.

You can plant them in a pot outside if you want.

May I just ask the experts a question?

I planted my garlic late, probably around March if my memory is correct. The plants are now beginning to go brown and are looking likely to fall over, however the bulbs arent that big underneath. Is it worth me leaving them in longer to see if they fatten up or is that it? End of season, get em out of the ground?

    Thanks guys

I've got the same problem - ordered them too late this year :o

I'm going to leave mine in a bit longer, but look for signs of them going to seed. You'll see a big flower spike rising from the plant. When you do, get 'em out pronto as the cloves will start to go woody and all the plants energy will go into producing seed.

We might get away with another week, but look for the flower spikes. They could probably do with some water too, if you've not had any rain.

  • Hiya yes I planted cloves in the hope that some garlic bulbs would grow. I didn't know it was such a long process - I had heard that if you plant a clove it will grow into a bulb then just take a clove off the new bulb and replant that. So theoreticaly you need never buy garlic again.

I just assumed it would be fast to grow and crop. Might have some in time for next year then lol.
