I always (now) plant supermarket garlic, nice big fat ones. One year I tried using my own left over little ones as you mention, and I had hardly any success at all, the first year it had not done well (the littlies are still alright to cook with though, but a bit fiddly). I think it is because the little bulbs don't have enough food stored in them to give the new plants a good start. Don't worry about the Spanish label on the ones you bought BTW, not much is grown commercially over here, so you are unlikely to find UK grown ones anywhere in any case. OK, they might PREFER the weather in Spain, but so would we all! You have reminded me, about time I started some off in the greenhouse in little pots - thanks! :T
  • Garlic likes to go through a cold snap before it grows too much, so weather over here is fine. :)

Well I shall give it a go. Even if I only get small bulbs, its only cost me 15p for three main bulbs so I cant complain!

    Hi angelina,

I'm going to have a go at planting garlic this year. This older thread might help: Growing garlic

I'll merge your thread with it later today as it helps to keep all the suggestions in one thread.

  • Hi, having grown garlic for several years, I wouldn't advise using bulbs from the supermarket. I have much better success with that from a nursery (or ordered online). Might be that it's colder here, than for others. To me time is precious, and if my garlic crop bombs out then that's no HG garlic this year.

As for the tiny bulbs, don't bother. They not likely to come to much either.

Sorry, this is a really negative post! Garlic is really worth growing - very easy as long as you keep it well watered and weed free! The results are great - much better flavour than stale old shop bought stuff.
