Growing garlic

- or have I got this totally wrong? Does it need to be special compost? I inherited a green house when I moved here - we just store garden equipment in there - so is that the best place to put the pot? When would I expect it to have grown and do I need to water it daily - Sorry for so many questions, I'm new to all this!
Thanks

Hello Honey28,
Yes, just breakdown your garlic bulb into individual cloves. It’s important to choose only the firmest, plumpest cloves to grow. No special compost is required really but if you have some garden centre type potting mix suitable for pot plants in general, or for hanging baskets and window boxes or reasonably good garden soil all will be ok.
Wonderful news you’ve inherited a green house – that is such a bonus for you. You will be able to grow some fantastic tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and so on. How wonderful…
When you have planted your cloves, pointy end up and about an inch deep in the flowerpot, water it well and pop it into the greenhouse. On the floor will be fine, they’re not fussy where they sit – lol. Garlic will be quite happy growing outside too – they’re really not bothered at all....
As far as watering goes, just ensure the pot never dries out - damp is good, dry is bad… Your garlics will be ready to harvest about the end of August (roughly) if you plant them this month – they will be ready when the leaves turn a yellowy/brown colour.
Also you may wish to give your garlic and other veggie plants a liquid fertiliser feed now and again. They will really like this and reward you with a wonderful crop of goodies for the table...Next time you go to a garden centre have a browse around and look for a general-purpose fertiliser. The one I use quite a lot for veggies and flowers is called Phostrogen, I use others but this one is quite a good all rounder.
Just a final Old Style thought… If you want to get a book or two always go to your local charity shops first – they are a great source of gardening books. I have picked up some wonderful books for just a few pennies. The £2 Coin Savers Club = £346.00 (£300.00 transferred to Savings a/c)

Oh I'm sooo glad I saw this thread! Thanks for the step-by-step.
I have some lovely garlic bulbs at home - think I may plant some of the cloves when I get home! I am the garlic monster after all!
I've already got some herbs, chillis and peppers in the airing cupboard - hopefully they'll start sprouting soon!
I know its sad, but I get really giddy when I've grown something myself!

I cut the roots and stalks off my disasters from last year and replanted them right after reading this thread. They are looking pretty good now!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

Hello Chip_Butty,
It should still be alright to plant now. Just follow the notes on the first post and all will be ok. I would think they will be ready by late August or September time. The £2 Coin Savers Club = £346.00 (£300.00 transferred to Savings a/c)

Cool - I'll have a go too.The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0
