Cheap Compost Where and how much discussion thread

I hope there's not a confusion of terms going on here. 'Compost', as in the stuff made from rotted down organic matter is not suitable for potting purposes on its own. What you want for that job is properly called 'potting compost', which is specially made for the purpose, either from good quality loam with extra ingredients like peat, sand, lime and fertilisers, or 'soilless' types, which dispense with the loam in favour of peat or other materials.

It's an important distinction and a shame the two materials share the one word. If you try growing plants in the stuff that comes out of the average compost heap, you won't get very good results.

Some councils promote their rotted green waste as if it is the same thing as potting compost. Others are deliberately vague!

I got mine this year and last year from Wickes. I had four 75L bags for £10 and I find it to be very good. I use it for seeds as well as potting on.

This might be a misprice at the Drumchapel store but the compressed 40L peat-free stuff was scanning at £0.98 instead of £2.98.

The Lidl stuff is rubbish, has stones, twigs etc in it. Avoid it
