I got one of these about 2 years ago and I can't recommend it enough, you get such a good nights sleep,it's the best money I've ever spent.
I even got mattress toppers for my 3 kids, but there not as good as the full mattress by far.

Was yours the same as the one advertised? This one has only 1 inch of memory foam and I'm sceptical, is this any better than a conventional mattress with a memory foam topper?

Yes. I'd spotted this one only has 1" (2.5cms) of memory foam. Obviously the deeper the foam, the better the memory and the higher the comfort and quality of sleep experienced.

Others are available on the internet, albeit at higher prices, with deeper foam thicknesses.

Now some people can sleep soundly on just a park bench, so my advice would be to take a bit of extra care when buying one of these memory mattresses, so as to avoid being disappointed one way or another.

You need at least 2" foam and should be aware that although they are supremely comfortable (I speak from experience), they increase the warmth generated by your body considerably-in simple terms; if you sweat in bed now, a memory foam mattress or topper wil make you sweat buckets!!!!

I have this mattress and it is fantastic. I couldn't get on with the complete or thicker foam ones at all. I haven't had a problem with it increasing my sweating either(!), if anything I would say the opposite.

I think it is all down to personal taste. I would never buy a mattress online without having tried it first.

It was this OP post that got me on a search for a memory foam mattress, After having been in numerous bed shops, checked online retailers etc. I would like to offer the following:

This is relevant to all-foam mattresses which are rolled and expand upon unpacking. This is my personal opinion.

I considered some mattresses (which can sell very cheaply) on Ebay. But after reading some real horror stories (Ebay guides memory foam) of lingering fumes making people ill/sick plus the worry of if these (prob imported) mattresses actually do meet fire and safety regs I decided to stick with a manufacturer in UK. People tend to leave positive feedback for these mattresses just after they arrive and there is no scope to leave comments after having used the item for a period of time.

Many of the memory foam mattresses sold in shops, including the TJ Hughes Silentnight one referred to by OP, have only 1 inch of memory foam. Some shop advisors had no idea what they were selling one indeed informed me that their whole mattress was memory foam.

The minimum depth of memory foam I would advise is 2 inch anything less is widely considered to be a waste of time,

Silentnight often make 'custom' mattresses for specific retailers to sell. This is what confused me with the T J Hughes offer of a 1 inch Miratex. I was aware of Silentnight Miratex 300, 500, and 700 which respectively is 3cm, 5cm, and 7cm of memory foam on top of your standard foam mattress, but originally could find no info on 1 inch Miratex models. I now know that MFI also sell Silentnight 1 inch (£199) and 2 inch (£299) mem foam mattresses.

The one I eventually decided on was from a bed company that sells on Ebay as well as through there own site and warehouse. They gave me the following deal Silentnight Miratex 700, two free memory foam pillows, free delivery: £299. The deal appears reguarly and I am sure if you phone them you could get the pillows thrown in if they do not have a 'live' listing.

Delivery was next day and I have to say I am delighted. The mattresses can make you feel hot esp with non-cotton sheets so make sure you have cotton sheets and possibly a lower tog quilt. Also air the mattress with windows open for a couple of hours. Smell fades and dissapears after approx 48 hours.

All aches and pains I suffered from my old mattress have gone along with bouts of insomnia. The feeling is like floating on a cloud!

Suppliers details are: The Sleep Shop their Ebay shop is called sleep-to-go

    Hope this helps someone.

If you are worried about the heat then go for a Latex top. They are just as comfortable but because latex is natural it doesn't feel "warm" like memory foam.

  • Make sure you TRY before you buy ESPECIALLY if you are female & suffer from night sweats. You might also find that you really don't like sinking into the deeper ones - I certainly didn't.

Give me a good pocket sprung mattress any day to these. Each to their own but I thought they were dreadful. Speaking to friends about them (wish I'd done that before buying) many of them hated them too & relegated them to the spare bedroom. An expensive mistake!
  • WishIdReadSooner - that's really weird, that's the first time I've ever heard anyone say they actually prefer spring mattresses! Still, it's good for the warning, and yes, probably give them a go first.

We bought one from www.memory-mattress.co.uk (7cm memory layer) and it's been the best investment on any household item that we've ever, ever made. I've been sleeping so very much better since we got it. The only disadvantage for me is when I stop at a hotel/B&B that has regular mattresses, I don't sleep as well.

    Mattress snob, that's me :D
