wallace wrote:And with all due respect to you, there is no way you can possibly know that. Tesco have more than 1,000 stores in the UK, and (regardless of what Head Office says), each store seems to have its own policy.
What one cashier can get away with in one store might result in a warning from another if the store manager is more strict.

Sorry Ben, I think you are wrong (and the prvious poster) wasnt this post started with the fact that it varies from store to store and even person to person!, it would appear that for every tesco store in the country there is about ten coupon acceptance policies!
Also, on a lighter note; Tesco were on tv recently when they advised people to always haggle to get the best deal and then admitted they made a mistake as they did not mean that you were to try it with them!ben500 wrote:I understand ALOT more than I care to let on

Bit hypocritical bearing in mind two people with Tesco experience have stated one of your posts was a lie.
But what exactly do the Tesco Annual reports have to do with this thread?0 -
This coupons business is all new to me..I don't often shop ..however after reading igloos plight, as I walked around tesco extra in cardiff whilst my better half did the purchasing, I made sure to tell people looking at the computers to go to aldi - they have a better deal. I think I put off atleast two people. I think I will go shopping more often!Nil illigitami carborundum... :A0

Hi,
Sorry for being dumb. Where does one get the coupons in the first place?

Why will so many people on this thread fail to accept that, regardless of the 'Company Policy', the individual store managers still do have a right to exercise their own discretion when it comes to the acceptance of vouchers.
I have stated before that in Tesco Extra in Watford, they will no longer accept any vouchers unless the item has been purchased. This is that store's policy, which the Manager was well within his remit to instigate.
Why can't some people realise that using vouchers is not their 'right' and just accept it as a bonus when you use them.0 -

Perhaps becuase this is a national policy, and it comes from HEAD office?
If an individual store has it's own discretion then why bother having a national helpdesk to offer advice? Moreover why does that [coupon] advice not state that stores have discretion on this policy.
Could it be that they don't, and that they just think they can can do what they like, even if it flies in the face of company policy?
I don't feel any "right" to use coupons in general but when you get so much grief, and the grief varies from store to store, and you go to the trouble of contacting the head office....who state the policy, and go on to state this applies nationwide.....then yes, THAT makes me feel I have a right to expect this policy to be honoured. Pretty basic really.
The frustration is added to when even presented with clear "evidence" staff at stores often do not take it onboard. The attitude often displayed also adds to this.
The thing which is not present is clarity. I do think it is a bonus, but it's one I expect, given the information I have and it's one of the reasons I might choose Tesco over ASDA or Sainsbury. It's not convenient to check policy at every store...and that's without an individual store changing "policy" frequently.0 -

At the moment for instance : Best Magazine has £1.20 of coupons to cut out (it costs 70p). Quattro blades 4 pack are £2.98 in tesco and many have a £3 off 8 pack coupon on them. Nestle Fitnesse cereal might have a £3 off Joey DVD coupon on them.
There are also several freebie / money saving sites where coupon sightings are shared.

As I have pointed out before, many jobs thesedays have a requirement that you be able to make important decisions by yourself, without the need to check with someone else. A store manager is a high-up position, which comes with the authority to take the best course of action for their store.
Some clueless people seem to think that a store manager needs permission from head office just to use the toilet! :rotfl:0 -
I fully sympathise with and support Igloo.
However, I am concerned that any attempt to force Tesco to clarify their position on coupon acceptance may be counter-productive.
At present, obviously, the situation is unclear, and that allows Tesco (and the other chains) to accept coupons, even if policy is uneven.
In trying to push Tesco into a corner, we run the risk of them having a direct confrontation with suppliers over the terms and conditions of the promotions offered on th coupons. Tesco can hardly come out officially and say to the world, "Yes, we don't give a stuff about the the manufacturers, and we will take any coupon you throw at us". They could be open to a legal challenge, and they could not be seen, as a respected and respectable company, to be flouting the law. I think Tesco would be more likely to narrow their rules for coupon acceptance rather than broaden them, or officially declare that they accept all coupons.
I suspect thast Asda, Sainsbury, etc., would love to see this whole area cleaned up, and if Tesco were to decide, due to pressure from MSE-ers or otherwise, not to accept coupons outside the manufacturers' terms for doing so, that all the big boys would follow suit.
That would do us more harm than them, I think.
(I realise that it would take a very brave supplier to challenge Tesco over the acceptance of their coupons, but I don't think Tesco would wish to contravene any laws openly. If Proctor & Gamble, Nestlé, or one of the other big groups really wanted to challenge Tesco over this issue, I think they would have done it by now, but you never know. Whilst Nestlé would be damaged if Tesco refused to stock Nescafé, I'm sure Tesco would be hurt, too. Hence they may prefer just to keep things quiet).Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell, "Is Reality Optional?", 19930
