I like wartime cookbooks, too. Would suggest looking in library first, then buying if you like them.
And what about the Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyzyn? I've read and re-read that one loads of times.
John Seymour's classic on self sufficiency may be worth a look. Another one to check out in the library first then decide if its for you.0 -
I shall be off to the library for wartime cookery too - 1st thing - thanks for thisFight Back - Be Happy0

I'd second the Tightwad Gazette - I bought the three individual titles years ago although it is now available as one combined volume. I often pick them up for some renewed inspiration as there are lots of ideas in there for saving the pennies so the pounds soon add up!December GC: £3500

I got the former from a charity shop for £2 after wanting it for ages and tbh found it overpriced even then. About half the book is taken up with desserts and puddings and I never cook or eat those.
I have a lot of time for Economy Gastronomy and Jamies Ministry of Food tho and in addition on the cookery side, anything by Cas Clarke who did a whole series of about 8 books or so when I was around Uni age. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
Recently got Darina Allen's 'Forgotten Skills of Cooking' and love it - includes foraging, all sorts of basic dishes, how to use up more or less every part of an animal, preserving just about anything you can think of, wine and beer making, smoking food, sausage making, etc, etc... She is Rachel Allen's mother-in-law I think.Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0
