brought Host for website but how to work email on Horde?

I've just checked the in fo on Whois site and it lists 1&1 as my name servers but it does have a December date as the last update so I'm hoping/assuming it wont have the new name servers as that's only been done in the last few weeks!
I thought it was possible to 'hide' your address - I thought I'd clicked that when I first registered - I can't remember the name of the site I had to do this on.
I don't really want my info listed like that - I'm not trading (might do in the future but certainly not at the moment!)Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later datenow at Uni as a Mature student -update: now has a First Class BA!0 -
Go to nominet http://www.nic.uk/ and enter your domain in the whois lookup box.
Look down the list of details and you'll see the nameservers used by your domain. They are currently showing as 1and1.
I wonder if we're confused over the terminology.
You don't want domain forwarding or mail forwarding.
You want to change the DNS entry for the nameservers to be those of 3ix.
Check the email from 3ix it should list two nameservers for you to use, not the url to take you to your webspace.
Make sure you are clicking on DNS and then 'editing dns entries' as here ... http://faq.oneandone.co.uk/domains/dns_settings/4.html
and not entering a url in domain forwarding as here .... http://faq.oneandone.co.uk/domains/using_and_setting_up_your_domain/1.html
Not sure if this is a minor hiccup with what your doing or a failure of 1&1 dns propagation. I'd check those links and make sure you're editing DNS and not editing destination.0 -
Sorry added my post without seeing your last post!0

I already know who you are and where you live!!!:rotfl:
Don't worry though I won't tell anyone! :A
I've heard of a lot of people with the same issue at 1and1.
Edit the 'user data' in your 1and1 account to sort this out. Then keep an eye on the whois checking it occasionally as some have said it mysteriously changes back again in a few months!

not 1&1 mistake - definitely mine!
I emailed the tech team on 1&1 (quicker response than 3ix!) and he said the following:
I was able to checked here on my end that you only did the forwarding of domain and did not modify the DNS settings. Please undo the forwarding of your domain before changing the DNS settings. Kindly refer to this link http://faq.oneandone.co.uk /domains/dns_settings/4.html on how to modify your DNS settings.
knew I done something stupid... I kept thinking that 'forwarding' wasn't right but because I'm a newbie at this I followed the instructions but obviously not very well!
I've deleted the settings I had before and I have to wait now before I can try it again!
hopefully I will get it right this time.
your help has been great

lol :rotfl:
I remember that I went to nic.uk and opted out so it shouldn't be showing!!
I can't really edit the user data in 1&1 - I have to put my address etc - the opt out was on the nic.uk site - I'll have to have a nose around to see if i can find it again!Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later datenow at Uni as a Mature student -update: now has a First Class BA!0 -
Glad to hear you're getting sorted out now.
Its a bit scary and confusing managing a domain first time round. Once you've done it once its a breeze.
You shouldn't need to wait long. I would have thought you could change the nameservers as soon as you'd undone the forwarding.
Once you changed the nameservers the changes often start to take effect quickly within an hour sometimes.
It just takes a longer for the changes to propagate throughout the entire internets dns servers so it all depends on the dns server your pc uses!
Don't forget to post back and let us know when its all working right!
Then its on to the website! :eek:0 -
From what I've read your MX records are wrong (the part of your DNS entries that tell other machines on the internet where to send mail destined for your domain).
If your mail is being sent to the wrong server (1&1's mail server rather than 3ix) then they are definately wrong. Changing your nameserver may not necessarily automatically edit your MX record.
To send your mail to the people providing your mail services all you needed to do was follow this article, the change takes about 24/48 hours to propagate to any servers with the record cached, it would be instant for anyone else.

I see the nameservers on your domain have changed now. :T
Also I sent you a test email today which didn't bounce back this time so hopefully you've got it and all is sorted out now.0 -

Certain domain providers offer a paid for privacy on domains but be aware that certainly the .com and .net providers may be forced to stop offering this and reveal your details.0
