Hi
I'm trying out a host of my website (actually the website not completely built yet!)

But I got the name and signed up to 3ix - cheap and cheerful and it's a practice area for now until I see how my sites goes.

Now I've created an email address but I can't send anything to it - it just bounces back - I'm totally new to all this so apologies if this is simple.

I'm using Horde which is a choice given by 3ix - I know that it has an link to configure with outlook but I havn't got the full version of this yet - just the freebie one (I need to get outlook 2003 for my MDA eventually).

Is this why I can't get the email to work? but I don't see why I would need outlook except if I choose to receive or send my email from my home computer rather than online through the Horde email.

sorry if this is vague... feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer them.

I would appreciate any suggestions etc - thank you

Ensure 'My server requires authentication' is checked and that
you input your mail Account Name and Password.
anyone know how or where I go to do this bit?

what's the different between IMAP and POP3 access (I know yahoo etc use POP3 - and IMAP means you can read your mail on different computers but I'm pretty lost after that!)

Have you sorted out the nameservers?

If you bought a domain from one company and are hosting with another you would need to enter the correct nameservers to get traffic (www or email) to your host.

If you have set up the nameservers have you allowed time for the changes to propagate? (takes from a few hours to a few days).

Failing that what error is given on the bounceback?

Doubt its anything to do with Horde, as far as I know thats just the webmail client you can use to access your email account if you wish.

These refer to setting up an email client on your PC to collect your mail eg outlook express or thunderbird. The settings are entered when you run the clients setup wizard or entered in the clients tools>account settings or similar.

You should be able to set up the email from your control panel and then the emails be arriving on your hosts server (if the nameservers are correct). You should then be able to sign in to your hosts Webmail page and read/send your emails without setting up any client on your own PC.

Can you sign in on the hosts Webmail (Horde in this case) and see the accounts inbox etc?

I've sorted the nameservers last week and that's working fine (my domain name is with a different company). I'm now the proud owner of a blank page :D

I've contacted 3ix so hopefully they can point me in the right direction... I was getting a bit lost searching around the different parts of the site! lol

    I just don't think it's authenticated .. or somefink :o
I'm falling over just getting the basics done but that's how to learn eh!
    Thanks

Had a look at 3ix site and can't see their webmail address however http://www.3ix.org/webmail
seems to ask for the email address and password so try logging in through there and see if you can get to your email account.

I can get into Horde fine and I've tried sending an email out and the email is in the 'sent' box and not the outbox ie: waiting to be sent!
I did think that I should be able to use Horde online and not have to download anything so that's where I'm stumped!

If the account is created ok you should be able to login through webmail without worrying about settings etc.

The settings come into play when you use OE, thunderbird or whatever as a client to use the account.

So check it all works using webmail.

If you have cpanel access you could alsocheck the email from there. It could be just a typo in the address.

my CPanel has two email address (I've added one)
ie: the main account which just says my username (and doesn't have the @ etc listed)
I've created one with the name I wanted and that has the option of quote, password and can be deleted. it's definately not spelt wrong!

there is this note at the bottom of the screen:
'Be sure to enable SMTP Authentication in your E-mail client or you may not be able to send mail. If your e-mail client has trouble using a @ sign in the login, you can use +, :, or % sign instead.'

my brain is already showing signs of melting :p

Sounds like your email account is set up fine.

Messages in the sent box mean they've been sent ok.

Outbox would be messages waiting to be sent.

If the sent message has bounced back you would receive an email in your inbox from the mail delivery system detailing the error.

When you say you can't send anything to your new email address how are you trying to send it and from where?

This only refers to you setting up an email client on your PC to access your email account. You don't need to do this for your account to be functional, you can just use webmail.
