Well, the cost is humungous but well, hey ho only done it once in 36 years. We are talking £5,000 plus. I think when all extras added in it will be more than £7,000. I have set up the spreadsheet!

    Hi guys,

Today has been pretty grim. OH is still very poorly and heavily sedated. He is on the highest pressure that they can give him on the ventilator and this has caused two pneumothorax (sp) in the right lung. They have put a drain in for yesterday's but are sitting on today's as the xrays show that there is not much of a collection of fluid there yet.

His o2 requirements are 85% at the moment and once he reaches 100% there really is nowhere else for them to go. The Dr told me today that they have tried everything that they can think of and have started him on very large doses of steroids, this has no guarantees of affecting the course of this syndrome but it has in some people.

He is also concerned about his kidneys and has said that as a rule, people who need the filter for three weeks with no real changes in the kidney function are looking at them not starting to work again.

He has given him a 30% chance of survival barring no other complications and also said that if we are having this chat again in another three weeks they will be putting a different slant on the conversation.

If he recovers the Dr has said that there will almost certainly be long term damage to the lungs and the prospect of regular dialysis. He also said that at this point his recovery will involve months in the icu to wean him off the vent and because of muscle wastage.

The only blessing in all of this is that they continually assure me that he has no knowledge of what is going on. In the meantime we wait and see what the next few days bring.

Sorry guys but I am feeling lower than I can ever remember and just want things to be right again.

I hope you are all well.

    Smoky.
