As you're in Kent are you very far away from the coast?

If you can catch the fishermen when they come in from the sea, they might do you some cheap from the boat

Also check fishing villages, the little shops there tend to be quite cheap - or at least they are in Eastbourne

If you can't find any stalls, find the nearest sea-front restaurant specialising in fish - ask them where they get theirs from. Good luck. If you can find a local store, I guarantee it will be fresher than anything you buy in any supermarket :D

Mackerel is really cheap at the moment from the fish mongers.

I'm really sceptical about supermarket fish stalls after I got some haddock with maggots in. Urgh!

Asda are alright. There is a lady that works the fish counter at Asda near me, who always weighs the fish after it has been filleted, not before! It works out dirt cheap. I got three whole filleted mackerel for about £1.50 the other week because of her.

We live near Hull and would love to be able to go to the hull dock or Grimsby to get fresh fish but not sure of how to do it as the markets are for trade only.
    Any ideas?

I would never buy supermarket fish, especially at the bb date - fish needs to be as fresh as possible, and supermarket fish isn't particularly good even when it is first on the shelves - find a good fishmonger that gets fish on the shelves fresh, same day as bought, and balance the cost with some cheaper meals through the week.

I did buy supermarket reduced fish once for the cat - it was so bad even didn't eat it!

We shop at Bury market ( in Lancashire so not much use to OP) the fishmonger we use sells a whole salmon from £5, I can feed 8 people genorously from one this size. He also does £1 trays of fish, yesterday he had smoked haddock, tuna and cod, enough for one person for a good helping. This might help someone who likes fish in the North West.

My dad does a lovely dish with haddock, prawns and a white wine sauce. Bit of chilli gives it a nice kick too!

How about coating strips in egg and breadcrumbs and either frying or oven cooking them as haddock goujons.

If the fish is fresh, they could be frozen.
