  • I think that the basics range is very good on the whole. The fruit and veg is fab. The chips are horrid.

Never even been remotely tempted to try those chips, TBH. Have to say I've not been impressed with any of the 'cheaper' oven chips so far.

I actually don't mind the chips. We are talking about the oven chips aren't we? Not sure what the basic fry chips are like though.

I only like homemade chips, but buy the basic oven chips for oh. He frys them. He thinks they are ok.

Basics bananas are fairtrade as well. As are the stupendously cheap basics tea bags. Very good ethics IMO.

I didn't notice they were fairtrade, my little boy picked them saying they were cheaper and more in them than the others, can't argue with that can we.;)

  • I brought the chips to try but prefer to spent the money on the basic spuds and do my own. Your right though oven low price oven chips have never been that good. On saying that the kids liked them.

That's the thing that has delighted us - we used to subscribe to the oft-peddled belief that value/basics stuff is bad for your health compared to the branded. Amazingly, in many instances the truth is actually the very opposite of that!

    I agree with this completely

There's only one or two items I didn't like that I have tried, I don't buy the ready made stuff because I am cooking more from scratch these days.

I had it in my mind the Basics range would be much worse for me full of rubbish but I don't think this is the case at all! Plus you lot have pointed that out too that it contains many less additives/salt/sugar.

How weird is this? I used to think TTD range was higher quality, now I am not so sure at all in many cases.

Finally, I have got used to the teabags and they are ok, nicer than the T*tl*ys ones we have at work! 20 odd pence a box - bargain! :D

I think all the fruit and veg range is wortj buying - what is the difference between a basics onion and a TTD? Size? Shape? It's an onion after all :rotfl:

Finally seeing the tactics the supermarkets use to get us to spend more on more premium ranges. Eg. you've worked for it, you deserve it, it's better quality and more real with this picture of the country side on. Don't think so now, another trick in the majority of cases :rotfl:

Anyway I'd better lay off the chocolate mousses and creme caramels for a bit due my ever expanding waistline!

The Sweet Pickle is quite nice, 25p for a 285g jar.

Makes a great cheese and pickle sandwich.

Tried the washing up liquid (was skint last week but needed some). At 34p it just about does the job but TBH I've never found anything to be as long lasting as fairy. Bubbles disappeared quite rapidly and the consistency is quite thin so you do end up using a lot.
Still was slightly better than just using hot water ;)

Oh and I really like the chips. OK they're not McCains Home Fries (THE best oven chip in the world) but they do the job. Actually my home made oven chips tend to come out the same.
