I don't think anyone need worry about "walking round with a trolleyful of basics" - no one else is remotely interested in your shopping basket, we are all too busy looking for our own stuff.

And if anyone did look down their noses at the contents of my trolley I would just smugly smile and think how much less this is costing me than your trolley of things designed to line the pockets of the marketing dept!!!!!
Let's get ready to bumble! :rotfl:

I find I have to restrain myself from making an audible "Tut" when I see a conveyor belt of branded shopping going through the tills!
I know that all the Basics goods I buy are at least as good as the branded stuff - though I acknowledge some other items may not be.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

Just had the 2p chocolate instant whip for pudding, made with milk from Iceland (currently £1 for 4 pints) - worked out as 14.5p for 2 (rather large, ahem!) servings. Went down very well with the OH, as did the 4p curry sauce last week, neither of which he knows the prices of yet (although when asked whether he preferred that sauce or my homemade version, he did say mine was nicer, which is a nice compliment but annoying for the wallet!)

Lemon Curd, only 30p and tastes great to me.

Others in this thread beg to differ however!

I find it ok. 26 p when I got some and its almost as good as branded. Just a bit less tasty and a bit less lemony.

Carmine... thanks. Just got it fer to know what it was like. I generally dont buy jams etc - too sugary and not a sweet person. Also I dont eat much bread to warrant buying any.

Here come the results from the Chinkle jury (me and OH):
    REALLY GOOD (BETTER THAN BRANDS)
Basics Coxes apples (in season) SO sweet
Basics cherries (2008 season were heavenly)
Tinned fruit - the broken mandarin pieces are great in recipes or on my cereal
Packaged young leaf salad (lasts as long as the branded ones) but not the crunchy one (just full of cheap white cabbage)
CAN’T TELL THE DIFFERENCE (SO WHY SPEND MORE)
Fruit/veg - generally fine, just a bit smaller/odd shapes and I feel good that they aren't just thrown away as rejects I think smaller is often sweeter. Ever had huge but tasteless fruit they have in the States? Genetically modified to remove all taste.
Tinned chopped tomatoes / kidney beans/ baked beans/ pineapple / peaches

Spaghetti (ok, seems to take longer to cook/a bit glutonous) / lasagne sheets
    Mayonnaise / Tomato ketchup
Part-baked baguettes / Plain Muffins / Pita breads - just a bit smaller
Mozarella balls / brie / camembert / cream cheese/greek cheese
Tuna (and its line and pole caught so no need to feel guilty) / Smoked salmon pieces (perfectly fine for using in cooking & with cream cheese mixture for bagels) / Salmon fillets (responsibly sourced as well) Prawns - fine, just very small - but check the weight as there's usually offers on and the branded ones may work out cheaper
    Plain flour
Teabags (again fair trade as well)
    Butter
Vodka - can't taste the difference with a mixer
    Scourers
    HMMM, AVOID
Washing up liquid - just doesn't do the job and end up using more elbow grease!
Potatoes - go soft/sprout quicker and often have to chop off damaged/rotten bits
I try to avoid anything processed eg cooking sauces, ready meals (in general, not just basics range so can't comment on these)
Sliced bread - plasticy and chewy (usually make our own)
Shampoo/shower gel/mouthwash (cos the bottles aren't pretty sitting in the bathroom and can't be bothered to decant)
Cheddar cheese/red cheese - just not strong enough, so just end up eating flavourless lumps of fat
    Tissues - just too rough
Lemons - somehow less lemony and not good if the recipe calls for the zest as this tends to be very thin
Fresh juices - not as nice - tended to splurge a bit here with premium brands
Dishwasher tablets – I do notice a difference here even Sainsburys 3 in 1 aren’t as good as premium brands
Caveat: Always check against offers on branded products as sometimes they work out cheaper than basics.
