We regularly buy from the basics range:

    - Grated Mozerella for homemade pizza's
    - full flavour cheese
    - sandwich pickle
    - toilet rolls
    - apples (find they have to be eaten quickly though)

Ok...I continued on my basics shopping quest and here's the results:-

Lasagne (bit runny and not a lot of meat) but good for £1.74 for 500g
Rice Pudding - ok but very runny with lots of liquid and less rice
Basics white bread - always tastes like doughy to me

    Sorry meant to add:-
Baked beans and sausages basics - thought this was pretty good
basics midget gems - rather good for 31p but prefer sainbury's 'normal' wine gums at 38p at mo.

I found a new item in my store - Basics Part Baked bread. 44p. Tastes just as nice as the other part baked bread packs.

    Toilet paper.

I used to spend ages working out which was the current best offer on toilet paper. It'd be practically impossible with different numbers of rolls in each pack, and does the price per 100sht (sheet ;) ) refer to the pre-offer price or does it include the offer. Do I buy a pack of 16 or two packs of 9 which are on totally different offers?

So I bit the bullet and went with the basics which is always by far the cheapest no matter what special off might be on. There's nothing wrong with it.
  • I became a convert to the own brand value ranges when finances dictated that was all we could afford. Since then have tried them all and find Sainsbury's Basics to be the best. I still find myself buying a lot of 'cupboard' stuff from the range despite our improved financial situation. Items I like are:

    Toilet roll
    Washing powder
    Foil
Popcorn - this is the best, not toffee or too sweet, just right and WAY cheaper than the cinema
    Milk / Plain choc block
    Jaffa cakes
    Teacakes
Choc & Ice Cream Cones - not quite Cornetto, but good for the price
    Grated mozzarella
    Camembert
    Batter mix
    Sparkling Water
    Multipack Crisps
    Tortilla Chips
    Hand Cream
    Hairspray
    Toothbrushes
    Mouthwash

I agree with the comment made by some others that I wouldn't compromise on meat. Tend to use my local butcher or the reduced section at Sainsbury's.

WE INTERUPT THIS THREAD TO BRING YOU A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:

Following on from my last post here I have now opened and successfully consumed my sample tin of "Deep Blue" tuna costing the same as Basics at 29p.
Verdict: Tastes ok but half of the tin is water, however it is easier to drain than Basics so preferred. I shall be buying it again.
Cats may prefer it but hide the label if necessary. Some can read.

THANK YOU. WE NOW RETURN YOU TO THE THREAD.
  • i am a big fan of sainsburys and i ahve found the followin basics items to be pretty good:
    tinned tomatoes
tinned kidney beans(make decent chill/rice and beans)
beef frying steak (cooks quickly and doesnt go tough and chewy)
red wine (get through loads of this, very quaffable)
rubber gloves (do the job for me)
    scrubby sponges
shampoo and conditioner (2 haircare products for less than 60p, cant go wrong with tht)
    mixed peppers
    salad potatoes
    pitta breads
    frozen pizzas
    sliced ham
    breakfast juice
    l/life skimmed milk
    tin foil

things that havent been so good:
pasta (ok in a pinch but i prefer the pricier ownlabel)
sliced bread (slices too thin for me)
    cheese (not strong enuf taste)
mince (full of fat and gristle and disgustin grey color)

The basics drinking chocolate is fine while the cornflakes at 29p for 500g are a real bargain. Both items good quality.
