    After reading this thread I thought I'd try a few more 'basics',

    Basic butter - good
    Blackcurrent & apple squash - excellent
    Yoghurt - Bit watery but good value
    Musli - ok mixed with yoghurt but very dry even with milk

    White pitta bread basixs x6 are good as the more expensive ones

    I tried the fruit chews which are nice but LETHAL FOR TOUR TEETH so any fillings will be extracted by these super strength chews.

  • i like the bananas and they are fairtrade as well! and you get a huge bunch for your money.the worst for me are the wheatabix (the own brand are great) but the basics dont even look like a wheatabix and the kids refused to eat them. they go really nasty when mixed.had some basics mixed snack crisps and the onion rings in them were nice but they got ate up pretty sharpish, ideal for kids lunch boxes though.x

    I get basics:

    - pears in a bag - variety changes now and then and they can be small, but they are just as tasty as you'd want

    - mixed peppers - again, colour selection varies but taste etc is fine

    - tinned toms

    - jaffa cakes

    - flour

    - soft cheese (like philedelphia). Great for making pasta sauce quickly

    - apples, bananas

    My favorite is the basics fresh Veg Stir Fry . A big bag for 83p, but its often reduced which is even better.
  • I've recently started trying more Basics products as this cost of food is getting silly, so far I've found the following to be pretty good:

    * Bagged Mixed Salad
    * Bacon
    * Mature Cheese
    * Fabric Conditioner - only 33p for 2 litres
    * Eggs
    * Scourers
    * Ham

    I'll keep on trying the odd one or things every shop and see how I get on.
    Its nice to be important but more important to be nice!

    Basics Toothpaste 20p for 75ml.
    Minty flavour abit odd, but getting used to it. 1000ppm flouride is less than my usual Colgate (I think 1350ppm), but loads cheaper!

    Basics Shampoo. 27p for 1L.
    OK,cleans but strips natural oils from hair so wouldn't use it all the time, maybe every 5th wash.

    Got to disagree with your reasoning there!

    It's 13p a litre. That's 6.5p for 500ml. Their normal version is about 65p for 500ml, so it costs ten times as much.

    So if you're using 4 times as much of the Basics one, it's still costing less than half the price of the normal one.

    You'd have to use more than 10 times the quantity of the Basics one for it to be uneconomical.

    To clarify, even using 4 times as much, it still doesn't shift grease!

    Reading the newer posts, I can second the Basics Jaffa Cakes (dare I say, better than the originals?) and Yorkshire puds.
    "Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
