The figure of 0.006031 is from 2007/2008?
2008/2009 Poundages are below.
http://www.lpsni.gov.uk/index/rating/billing/poundages_2008__regional_and_district_rate_.htm
Anyway you're doing it the hard way
Rather than go to all the time and trouble of looking up the respective poundages and multiplying the figures manually, simply select Belfast on the Rates Calculator, ensure domestic is selected and type up the capital valuation - 260000 and click calculate. This gets a figure of £1598.480 -
So do you think we are/will be getting good value for these big rates increase. I'm really interested in hearing your views.

Belfast City Council puts a magazine through the door every quarter which details what rates go on.
According to them the money is spent on
-Antisocial behaviour initiatives
-Dog control services
-Street cleaning, anti-litter campaigns, graffiti removal.
-Waste management (19.5M), recycling centre operation. Note they say that they have to use privately operated landfill sites now as their own is full and this costs 3.5M extra but they have been 'saving up' for this so that the cost hasn't been passed on in one go.)
-Maintenance and improvement of playgrounds.
-Providing support for the elderly.
-Subsidised leisure centre membership for target groups.
-Maintenance of public parks and roadsides.
-Funding public festivals.
-Maintenance of public buildings (waterfront, Belfast Castle, Malone House, Belfast City Hall, others?)
-Provision of community centres for public use.
I'm sure they do other stuff that I don't know about

Hi
When you are working out your Capital value is that based on the value in 2005 that we were given or on todays prices?
I moved into a new house last year and despite 3 phonecalls to the relevant agencies I have still never got a rate bill. The property is about 3 years old and apparantly never was rated by the previous owners.
I am terrified I will get back dated to when I moved in. The problem is, I think, is that the house wasnt built when the last figures were recorded and the house will have to valued at what it was worth in 2005 even though it was only built. What happens for houses built after this?Live on a little over £4k challenge

Capital values are available on this website http://vlistdcv.lpsni.gov.uk/search.asp?submit=form
this figure is what you input into the other site to work out rates.
My last house was a new build and my first 'owned' home (had always rented before). We moved in in April and got a rates bill for the full year plus the year ahead the following April. Thank god someone had given us a belated housewarming present that covered most of the arrears. I'd say you should be in touch with them again and be more insistent (either that or start putting your rates aside in the meantime cos you ARE going to end up paying them).0 -
Thanks leftie M and belfastgirl
I too am trying to believe these price increases will be worth it, but somehow I doubt it. It's amazing how expensive all our bills are and how everything is constantly increasing in price - except our salary of course!!
:rolleyes2
At this rate in 2 or 3 years I might be paying nearly £350 a month in Rates and water charges!!!! It's a scary thought.
Can the general public ever complain or do anything about these desperately high rates does anyone know?! :money:
