Hi - I tried Metrogel years ago and it had no effect. Recently I returned to the docs and am now taking antibiotics on a long term basis, however I now only use Macadamian Nut oil as a moisturiser and each night cleanse my face with a cotton pad suffused with the nut oil and a couple drops of Tea Tree Oil. This is because there is some unsubstantiated research which links the eye lash mites (Demodex) with the acne roscea - my own experience is that it's very effective.

I began a thread about it yoinks ago.. however I find that if I don't use the oil and then oil/tea tree combination I have severe breakouts of sores. TBH I don't know if it's the antibiotics or the nut oil/tea tree oil combination which is more effective and I really don't want to stop one or other to find out. After over 30 years with the problem I'm just grateful that I now have some control over it.

Oh, I also wash my face with cool water and Tea Tree Oil facial wash.

Hope this helps, though I have to emphasis that the combination works for me and is not proven.

Thank you very much Gers. I'd never even heard of eye lash mites, eek! I already have some tea tree oil and I'd love to try and find a quite natural routine, it sounds quite similar to oil cleansing but without the hot water.

I'd really like to avoid taking antibiotics at all so fingers crossed for the Metrogel and that at least one of the suggestions on this thread, or the other one linked, will work! :)

  • Hi there. I have no experience of acne rosacea, however have had problems with eczema and very sensitive skin for years and have found Cetaphil to be great for my skin. I use it as a face wash rather than a cleanser but thats just personal choice, cool water rather than hot. I get it on prescription from GP and was told that it is recommended for those who have had facial surgery immediately after the procedure as its so gentle. Maybe worth a go?

A brand called Mir(google it), are made especially for rosacea users. Argan oil is fabulous. I use Elemis and get on great with the Sensitive Wash, in fact all of the brand part from the Papaya and Tri Enzyme range.

I personally cannot use anything with rose oil in it, breaks me out.

I have not been diagnosed but suspect I may have this La Roche Posay stuff has really helped my skin & calmed the redness down so much. It's available in Boot's sometimes they have offers I have also found Pharmacy at hand really good pricewise. I have linked to the 1 on amazon as you can see the reviews there.

Funnily I usually can manage with the OCm till I get a bad flare up - then its back to Liz earl ( I save it esp for bad times)

One thing Ive noticed, Im a cook in whats becoming a very busy restaurant, and if we have had a hectic weekend and Ive spent the best part of two nights cooking steaks - my skin is a mess. The heat and steam from the grill seems to be the problem as my right hand was also getting the same type of skin problems. Now I slather on the moisturiser and hand cream when working in heat and there is a slight improvement so far

I have acne rosacea (for about 3-4 years now) and it took me a long time to settle into a good routine.

I don't use anything from the dr and haven't for about 2 years - what I do is cleanse my skin in cold water with grapeseed oil and use a home made moisturiser with geranium and lavender in it (my friend makes it for me).

Makeup wise I can't wear foundation, and I use a Skin79 BB cream with SPF 50 (in an orange bottle).

Also eat as much fruit and veg as I can and drink a lot of water.

Do you do this in the same way as oil cleansing method but with cold water? I have found that if the water isn't hot enough then my skin feels so oily and horrible.

My forehead is so greasy anyway.

I've been using the Metrogel at night only, as it is just so peely there's no way I could wear that to work! It's working wonders.

I've also started putting on Body Shop Aloe vera moisturiser in the morning and that makes my skin sweat loads, which is horrid, but apart from that doesn't seem to be causing any problems.

I've just been washing with bar soap at night and then in the morning I was the Metrogel off with a flannel and lukewarm water. I've also used a Johnsons gentle exfoliating wash a few times this week.

Fingers crossed, it seems to be calming down. I might try experimenting with some of the products you've all recommended once it's all settled down again. I'm wary of trying the OCM again, even with cooler water, because before that my skin was just always rosy but then it got much worse!

    Hi,

I too have acne rosacea, I only use lukewarm water to wash my face, and after a bit of online research asked my doctor to prescribe me Finacea Gel, which I would highly recommend.

Obviously different people have different triggers, but personally I've found that avoiding caffeine as much as possible has also made a huge improvement in my skin.

Good luck in finding what works for you :)

I use Pevonia RS2, unfortunately it isn't exactly the cheapest but I have struggled to find anything else that actually helps xx
