  • To echo a previous post, I also find Lush's Fresh Farmacy soap good at reducing redness. It is a little drying though so I'd only recommend it for oilier skins.

I have a theory that a dietary deficiency of omega 3 is causing my redness but I haven't finished experimenting yet.

I read that, very interesting and makes sense.. So is your routine still working for your skin Gers?

Sorry for the delay in replying - been away.

Yes, it is still working. In fact I've stopped the antibiotics (about three weeks ago) and now only use the tea tree oil/macadamia nut oil stuff last thing at night. So far, touch wood, no outbreak though I don't know if the antibiotics still 'work' for a time after ceasing.

Once again I have to say that this is only limited research about this method and, whilst it seems to bear up well, it's far from being proven. So, it works for me but may not for everyone.

Well, here we are months later and I have to report that I've not had an outbreak since starting on the oil/tea tree combination. :j

Antibiotics have been sent back to the chemist and I am now using the oil treatment at night exclusively. Can't believe the change in my skin. If I miss a night then I know about it but I can catch up and have not had any of the weeping, sore and itchy skin again.

Still not sure how/why it works, but it does for me.

Most interesting! Can you tell us where you source them from? On a quick google I'm only finding macademia oil as a hair treatment (though maybe it's the same thing :o) also which tea tree oil, I know they aren't all the same. Would love to give this a try - though my rosacea isn't bad but I do have a few raised bumps on my face that I think could be connected to the mites....

I bet the macademia nut oil from Amazon (via Naissance) and the tea tree oil from either Amazon too or a health shop. If it's Australian then it's usually good. You could also use almond oil or jojoba oil - and don't use too much tea tree as it's very astringent.

After using it on my face and eyebrows I do another pass over my eyelids as this is where the demodox mites also live and can cause itchy eyes.

I've just found a new piece of research published in Aug 2012 in the Journal of Medical Microbiology although again no link can be fully established. It just works for me!

  • Thanks Ger! Off to order some.

I've been reading some more about this and it seems that this could also be at the root (inadvertent pun) of my itchy scalp, and thinning and lumpy eyebrows as well as rosacea! So I'm keen to have a go and hit it from all angles. But my skin and scalp are sensitive and there's only a few shampoos etc I can use. Would it be crazy to try just putting a bit of tea tree oil into existing shampoo and facewash rather than buying new??

Yes ( I mean, no, not crazy!)- I also use Tisserand tea tree and grapefruit skin wash on my face when in the shower, however bear in mind that the demodex mite is only active in the dark so it's a night you need to apply any treatment. This is why I use the oil combination (on a cotton pad) just after I turn off the light! I know, it's weird... :o but it works for me.

The life cycle of the mites is approx 15 days so perhaps you could do your own study? I think that this span is why I can 'afford' to miss a night though I do tend to be very rigorous about it.

Metrogel never worked for me and the idea of long term antibiotics is awful in so many ways.

Good luck BG - I really hope it works for you too so please let me know about your efforts.

How about Dr Hausckha, their products are natural, I have tried some of their creams and cleansers and they are great!

    This is very useful!!

I just ordered the oils online should arrive later in the week I will let you know how I get on :) thank you again!
  • OK so my stuff has arrived - yay!

But I just realised Ger you say you use this to cleanse your face. Normally I take off all the slap when I get in from work :) do you keep your makeup on till you're in the dark or do you cleanse twice (I think that might be a bit much for my skin :)). And how do you moisturise? Or do you?

I also just realised that all of my makeup etc is presumably infected?? Did you get rid of this stuff?

I will also make some efforts with swapping pillowcases - and will start using facecloths to dry my face since I'm not getting into new towels every day :)

Anything else I should think of?

Sorry I just got into implementation mode! Any advice would be very gratefully accepted.

Edited to say that I did buy tea tree shampoo - DH has fallen in love with it *rolleyes* apparently he is very fond of the smell of tea tree oil, which is a good job considering he's going to be sleeping with it!
