Apparently I could offer to pay the CC companies the £170 between them and then agree to sell my Fathers house once he has passed,t o pay the debt fully. A charging order I think they called it.
Don't go for this charging order - it basically means you are selling a chunk of your fathers house to them, why should you allow this to happen ?
I would advise just telling them that you can only pay this £170 between them, and no more can be raised.
They are not interested in the legalities of who ran the debts up, they just want their money back.
Paying something is better than nothing, they may sell the debts on to a DCA (Debt Collection Agency) who will threaten bankruptcy, bailiffs and allsorts of threats. These are just threats, please don't let them intimdate you and just point out that you are doing your best and are paying them something.
Going to CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau) is a good idea because they will negotiate with the Credit Card companies on your behalf and have access to professional legal advice.
I'm still of the opinion that the police will just be more trouble than they are worth, at the end of the day the problem of paying the debts back will still be there. Once again, Good Luck with this unpleasant situation.0 -

This is where it goes into a grey area IMO.
Had OP just told the credit card companies that he had not set up these new accounts then there would be no debt to repay.
The fact that he has tried to repay with monies from his son now makes him an accessory of sorts as if he has accepted the situation.
If only he had taken legal advice at the beginning!0 -
Indeed legally he should've reported it immediately , he has tried to solve it his own way (which i'm not saying is wrong) but this is a difficult situation.
I would force your son to take out a loan to pay off the credit cards in your name... Or force him to sell his car etc etc.
He needs to learn a lesson, its not very loving stealing money from a parent.. just takes the !!!!.0 -

I think only 1 other person suggested the loan, IMO that would be the best option, no bad rating for you and he could take it over a good number of years so that he could afford the repayments.... only if it is possible of course, but surely worth considering and looks to me like the most stress free option....0 -
With his track record, it seems unlikely that son would get a loan, unless pops stands guarantor for it:rolleyes: ?"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
