Egon ..lil_me..is one of you there :o ..another daft question.. is malt extract... malz extrakt the kind that you stick in malt loafs etc??.... it sounds right but thought id check :D Oh and i spotted maismehl today for €1.49 and not €1.99 like i paid...in the same bloomin shop..on its own near nothing related  ..so at least i can get it cheaper next time :j ohh and im now in search of tapioca flour which is wiessmehl i think -but no joy so far :p

    Hi MrsM,

Malzextrakt is used in Germany to darken bread and rolls, so I asume, that you can use it for a malt loaf. Never done it before.

For the tapioca flour, your best bet would be an asian supermarket/ shop. There should be at least one in Bielefeld. (Detmolderstrasse 571, Tel: 0521/3933361) I think it is nearby!?!

What do you want to use it for???

Today we had leftover shep pie and pastry.

I adjusted one of MrsM recipes, we had pork left over from sunday and some sausages and veg and pots. I mixed it all up and rolled it up in shortcrust pastry. DH loved it. Some of the mixture was put on the shep pie and went down well with everyone too. DS1 (2 1/2) even wanted second helping.

    Evening all :D

EGON :j :j :j :j :j :j ....you have just made my hubby go all pale :rotfl: the thought that i may find another supermarket is too much for him :p ...well actually its more the thought that i may make him take me ;)

Detmolderstrasser is the road hubbies camp is on... and ALDI.. it goes on for ever..but i think i know which bit i need to find that Asian store...watch out March' budget here i come :D ..... its gonna be a trek but i think i will wait until next week as hubby is away all week so it will break up a day :Talthough i may get him to drive me to find it first ;) im sure he will cope as long as i don't want him to go inside:rolleyes: .... the tapioca flour is supposed to be really good for making pasta... so i thought i would give it a go ....

Carolt2... here you go ..manage to find and copy it from the old thread ;)

    Mandarin pancake recipe
    • 2.5 cups - 310g - 9 3/4oz plain flour
    • 2tsp caster sugar
    • 1 cup - 250ml - 8floz boiling water
    • 1tbsp sesame oil
    1. place flour and sugar in a bowl and pour over boiling water
    2. stir the mixture a few times and leave until lukewarm
    3. knead on a lightly floured surface to make a smooth dough
    4. cover and leave for 30mins
    5. roll it into a long sausage and cut into 20.. i weighed the mix and divided it and its roughly 25g if i remember correctly :p
    6. roll each into a ball and then into circles about 3" in diameter
    7. lightly brush one side of a disk with the sesame oil
    8. place another on top and roll until about 6" in diameter
    9. repeat so that you have 10 "double" pancakes
    10. heat a dry frying pan and place one pancake in..
    11. when bubbles appear, turn over and cook the 2nd side -press down with a clean tea towel
    12. they should puff up when done
    13. drop on a plate and when cool enough to handle they will peel apart
    14. keep them covered to save drying out
I know it sounds long winded but its very simple and quick to do ;)

You can make them in advance too, and to re-heat either steam them wrapped in a clean tea towel, or wrap in foil and place in a medium oven for a couple of minutes

Fallenangel shelley..thanks for that recipe..guess everyone is aware of my tortilla obsession :rotfl: ..hubby has requested them tomorrow with hm turkey meatbals mmmmmmmm

Countrymusicfan.....Who do you have to feed? and what sorts of things will they eat? im sure we can come up with some ideas to help reduce the cost..

Egon.. just saw that the savoury meat roll went down well :T its a fave in this house..and can make meat go for miles :rotfl: ...and the little one liked it too :j

  • spent £1 yesterday on crisps for lunchboxes. Pleased with our efforts tonight. We had some left over puff pastry, chipolatas and streaky bacon in the fridge, but only a bit of each. We made some bacon and sausage puff pastry rolls with HM chips and salad. They were fab and everyone enjoyed them, and not a bit of waste. Previously all this stuff would have sat in the fridge unused and eventually binned, so I am really pleased:T
