Lipsticklady, you mentioned in your first post that you make calls to Ireland. Dont want to confuse you, but there is a company that I use that is really good value. If you go to https://www.telediscount.com and you'll find that they charge 2p per min to Ireland. You dont have to register or use a different provider. All you do is dial the access number of the country you require followed by the internatuional dialing code and the telephone number. I use it to call Australia for 1p min often. it actually cheper to speak to my sister over there than to my brother in Stoke

Telediscount is part of the 1899/18866 family. If you use another sister company https://www.bestminutes.co.uk you can get your calls down to Eire from a landline to 1p a min by using access no 0844 861 51 51.(Min call charge of 5p applies) .

    What's going on here?

This is an MSE forum - the first place to go is the MSE CallChecker for goodness sake!

UK to ROI calls? - 1p/minute from 1899 too - and no having to pay your call provider's minimum call charge if there's no reply in Ireland.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

  • Hello everyone,

I have just found Edinburghlass very helpful post listing all the NTL success stories. The link is http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=79351.

As you will know from the above threads i managed to whittle down my NTL bill. Yesterday, i was telling my friend about this site and on how it enabled me to 'Make the call' to NTL.

She proceeded to tell me that she too is an NTL customer and is unhappy with her bills! Originally, she signed to NTL for 24/7 phone and broadband. She decided after 6 months that she was going to get rid of her computer and so would no longer require Broadband.

She informed NTL of this and they informed her that she either pay the remaining months on her broadband or migrate to a T.V package. The package offered was not the basic package but had the majority of the channels.

She is currently paying around £50 per month (i think for just the telly). She never wanted a Full T.v package and would be quite happy with basic sky pack and 24/7 phone.

Plus, after she cahnged her package NTL 'mistakingly' subtracted £40 or £50 from her account which she has still not received!!!!

I have told her to 'make the call' but, like me she doesnt feel competant enough. Can anyone tell me the best deals they hav egot on this type of package and any freebies NTL added (i.e Call barring).

Thank you MSE users.....you kind hearted bunch!!
  • i to have a prob last december i was leaving the country for 5 months had broadband so as i want go to be here to use it i asked if they could put me on some package as i didnt want to pay 25 quid a month and not use it all they could do was to put me on a lower package 17.99 a month, which i agreed to had no choice, so as this december i again plan to leave country for 4/5 months my only option is to have the modem taken out and have any tv packages stopped as the idea of paying them 125quid for something that i will not be using annoys me(broadband) and when i return rejoin ntl, its a shame as they been pretty good to me had probs with net connections and speeed they gave 3 months half price net to me and recently gave me a month free due to minor probs. they should have some package for people going abroad not using modem for long period and charge them nominal rate with them turning modem of there end until people ask for it to be turned on when they return. im sorry if this is not the right thread for my commments

    Shadowbender,
I would just cancel the lot, then re apply when you get back for the £30 all-in package of phone ,tv, and broadband. You can do this if you have been with them more than 12 months, and there is nothing that they can do, other than offer you something better or give in.
REMEMBER that you pay a month in advance so cancel the month before you go.

Just got a leaflet today with " Digital TV and phone for £19.99 a month, (Talk unlimited local) anyone interested 0800 052 1301.
New subscribers should " DO IT ONLINE " for a discount, AND go via rpoints etc to get a tenner in points on top.

Lipsticklady, just come across this thread as I was away at the time of OP.
Your package will include the International calling discount , so calls to Ireland and the US will be 2p per min 24/7.

You seem to be baffled about their charging policy, which I admit is getting a bit devious, not the whole truth, judging by their website options. The TV prices quoted also contain the phone line rental, so seem high.

You should be roughly pay £10 for a phone (rental), £10 for TV (family package, 60+ channels) and if you push as you have, £10 for broadband).

Basically as they are competing against BT they will try to beat them, they were first with 3-2-1. and Sky used to give them a discount, making them cheaper than Sky, (but no longer).

Those on 3-2-1, should check their call charges, as they may be better off on the 5p plan where off-peak calls are 5p for up to an hour, this also gives you the international discount deal (normally £2 extra) as well. This takes rental up to £10.50
You do NOT need to take TV with a phone AND you can just have Broadband installed (free) on its own, like what I have just done in another house, got £10 for booking online and £15 from rpoints ( and then sneakily use VOIP :j )
