That is not your password, that is the wireless encryption passphrase or key. The username/password required to connect, are hard coded into the router.
I have the username and password to connect to the wireless internet and the username and password supplied by Sky for access to the router.
What else do you need?
TBH if you are needing to play around with the router settings beyond the control that SKY give you then you are probably either doing something dodgy or using services that would invalidate some sort of terms and conditions from Sky0 -
" What else do you need?"
if you intend using another router (as a backup) you need your sky login and password details, these are not supplied and can only be obtained by various 'hacks'.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

If your router is faulty then surely the onus is on them to provide a new or replacement router. Otherwise surely it is against the law to lock down services like this and not provide a router that you require to use the service
They cant make you pay x amount a month for a service that requires their hardware then not supply working hardware to use this service?
I maybe wrong but I woud have thought that they replace the router if there is an issue. I was under the impression the hack was to enable the services that are locked down by sky and otherwise available if you purchased the router from netgear seperately0 -

That is the username/password to access the router, not to connect to the ISP! e.g. required if you wanted to use a different router etc. Yes I know that it can be extracted.

Yes I know see above. That is the username and password to get to the router settings!
Like I said what else do you need???
tonyhague has kindly pointed out that you may want a backup router. Though (like I said also above may be wrong) but shouldnt sky supply a replacement router if yours becomes faulty?0 -
Anyway this is getting away from the OP question and tbh I dont really want to be arguing on a thread over Sky Broadband, my post was initially to answer baron777red's question are sky any good as an internet provider and to not put him off by posting comments like "If your router goes tits up your screwed" as chances are it wont! and if they do sky wont leave you paying for a service you are unable to use or you simply cancel the FREE service!
In my opinion and the people who I work with (at least 4 others) who use sky all recommend it. I have had no issues with the internet access/router/support/speed
In terms of a FREE internet service they are good and do what most people require0 -
how long would it take to get a replacement from sky, and if would they charge? i have 2 routers set up with my isps details, if the one i'm using breaks, i can be back online in minutes, not days. locking the routers in the way that sky do is good for their support (1 router=1 script) but its no good to those of us who like to try new hardware to get the best from out connection. i gained 2 profile steps (now on max 7150) by changing from one router (sky supplied, to someone else, hacked by me and used with my supplier(netgear 834gt (£16) ) ) to another (supplied by another isp, again, hacked and not with them (2wire 2700hgv (£20.50))).
looks to me like a good reason for getting the login details...Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

I thought that there was a set up charge??
Also that it was subject to continuation of Sky TV subscription and a lengthy stitch in contract.
Sky have been known to increase their prices in the past..

Fair enough, though I guess the OP has to decide if they could do without the internet for a few days.
For me the free internet they provide and locking down of the router is better than paying for internet access and the ability to use whatever router you like. I can see where you are coming from though for redundancy but for what you get I think the free or £10 cost is justified
In terms of service and support for the original question I have had no issues0
