Mine's fixed rate too but I try to ignore the fact that it's now significantly more than the base rate, sob weep. But I agree, I'd rather know what was coming out each month.

Check us out, half way through NQT year and all that

Yey Way to go Courgette!!! Congratulations!!! Keep going, we are nearly there.

Thanks guys, yeah I'm happy with the fixed rate, I don't do risk.

Yeah, as for the car we are defo going to try and "play the game". I thought a second hand VW Passat Estate a couple of years old would be maybe 3K! However, I only thought they were like 10K new! Ahem....apparently it would appear that I have no clue.

I nearly fell through the floor when we were at the garage yesterday. OMG! The one we are looking at is a 1.6 petrol with only 2K on the clock (56 plate). However, we wanna see if it's any good on the motorway since thats what it will be used for. If not there is a 1.9 diesel to try as well. The Petrol is 8995 and the diesel is 12K I think.

I have no clue, but he knows I needed it for work for Monday, so I'll be telling him I've sorted a lift out (even though I haven't and might actually have to hire a car) for the immediate future so we have more time to look around now. It's important he knows we aren't desperate I think.

Boo though, I don't want a new car....I like mine!!!

Well done on that folks! It's hard work - but the spring/summer terms always go more quickly. I think it's the sunshine!

It's a shame about the car situation - hope you get it sorted out soon.

Ok so the car is bought. A 56plate 2 litre TDI SE VW Passat Estate. We had a slight change of heart though and have only put £3500 down on it and are getting finance for the rest of it. If we paid more off now we would have no savings safety net! That would be a tad worrying especially with unexpected costs that come with moving house.

So we've taken a finance deal with a cheap interest rate for 5 years to make the payments small. However, we fully intend to pay it off early. There is no charge for early repayment fees, so all is well. And we get reimbursed for any over paid interest. It's a much better finance deal than my ex got (many moons ago admittedly).

They gave us a grand for our car as well which we were more than happy with, especially given that it was gonna cost us £900 to get it road worthy. We should hopefully get the car by Thursday (all being well).

Although I should add that should we find a loan with a cheaper fixed interest rate with no early repayment charge, then we will take that out and pay of the car finance V early. lol

I hate cars! They're the one thing that blows your budget out of the water!

Hope it's reliable, does its job and behaves. (The car, that is!)

Thanks for coming clean on your original idea of the costs; hope that now allows you to plan the budget now for the replacement(s) alongside the loan(s?) so it'll be cash all the way in future?

Sounds like you have managed to get a good deal, especially if fixed rate and yet you can repay early without incurring the interest for the full loan period. The car sales people almost sound "trustworthy" - how the world's changed! ;)

I'm sure the TDi will be perfect for your needs and both reliable and economic to run. Do take care regarding the warranty restrictions on servicing etc, often the interval the insurer requires is less than the standard service interval.
  • Hi Twinklie!
Good luck with the car - it's not something I have to worry about at the mo, as I can't drive...I think I may be quite lucky. Hope yours treats you well.

Thanks for your wishes and warnings folks.

Had a bit of a blow today though financially. Tax bill came for £387 for OH and was incredibly stressful to organise. It was a final demand letter saying they were going to take him to court. However, the tax office said it was well out of order. Who knows! He paid it anyway.

AND the survey was done on the new house. Needs a few holes in the roof sorting, a damp proof course doing and some rot issues on the downstairs skirting boards. Bum. Also needs the walls tying! Grrrrr....damn my parents. The surveyor reckons that they might be getting a better deal than we are...which I was shocked about.
