Hi twinkle
I wrote a huge post bout slow cookers for you and it dissapeared
Basically it said ... slow cookers are goodI've got a crock-pot one and its brill as you can put in the oven and on the hob too. You can make anything with sauce (always add less water/stock than normal) and i brown meat in the sc by wacking in on high while i prep everything.
Hope you've had a good dayCurrently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck

Right I think I'm done work wise for today...don't seem to have gotten anywhere in the last half hour...lol. Ah well.
My list doesn't seem to be getting any smaller either which is a tad upsetting.Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25

I've decided to post a SOA taking a leaf out of Michelle's book. Since we've not critically looked at our finances with us living apart now. I can see clear areas where we can cut back (FOOD) but we shall see.

The credit cards are 0% currently and hopefully will be swapped to other 0% deals or paid off before we start paying interest on the balance of those cards.
Somethings such as other travel are slightly over estimated....it varies dependent on how much back and forth is needed by DH on the trains and also his bus pass which is £10 per week!! He's fixing his bike this weekend though so hopefully that bill will reduce.Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25

Oh and DH says I can by my slow cooker later sooooo the challenge is this. Give me a recipe thats cheap and cheerful and that I can make in it! Can be meat or veggie, but not mushroom based (I can't digest them...and you'll kill me!!!).
We don't have anything in the fridge (because we haven't been home) so we have to go shopping anyway. I'm going to freeze what we don't eat and make something else on the Sunday...and freeze that too!
Suggestions please.
Oh and any suggestions need step by step cooking guides and ingredients lists... I'm thick! :rotfl:Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25

So I only have 4 things on my list that I haven't done. Only number 2 HAS to be done for Monday...so fingers crossed DH can stay at work a while longer before I have to go and pick him up!

:rotfl:What did you want to follow my lead for?
I've seriously scared myself doing mine. So much so that it has spurred me to sign up for some exam marking this afternoon. Fingers crossed and all that, as i don't think a couple of quid a week from ebay is going to cut it. I can't see on paper how i am making my books balance, and i have spent all day thinking about it.
I am so jealous as you have a budget for hair cuts and holidays. I cut my own thankfully, or if i am really lucky have blagged a free one from DH's cousin. I don't think i have paid for one since before i had DS1 in 2006. Holidays - we are lucky that the ILs own a 2nd house on the Kent coast and are willing for us to stay there for free. Only food, travel costs and cattery. Then our centre parcs break in February we bought as a family christmas present for the in-laws and ourselves. Otherwise that would have been out of the question too.
Yours seems scary too. A large amount going out on rent and mortgage. Also that union sub still seems low to me after our talk on Earthgirls thread. Will this go up?
Slow cooker - my most often recipe is carrot and lentil soup. Fry an onion and a couple of cloves of garlic, or don't if you can't be bothered. Peel and chop about 6 carrots. Add about 1/2 to 1 pint of water or stock. wash a couple of handfuls of red lentils and add. Cover and leave on high for about 3-4 hours. Blitz it in a blender when done. Voila - yummy soup. If i am being particularly scrooge like and we have had some broccoli, the stem/stalk gets peeled and chopped and added. Waste not want not. If i've paid for it then it will get used somewhere. (Chopped broccoli stalks can be frozen until needed for this use.)
I'll warn you - i have found cooking potatoes a bit dubious in the slow cooker. I don't know if it is just me, but it seems that however long i cook them for, it is impossible to cook them. I've tried different sizes and no help. I tend to boil them separately if we want them.0 -
Yeah the union sub will go up next year (I think) I'm still on an intro rate at the moment though.
I'm exam marking as well...OCR. I know we have some naughty things like holidays and my hair cut but, I figure I work hard so why not, I don't go out or anything! The holiday is a bit expensive because we are going back to where I used to live over xmas and new year. I get to be in my fav place in the world, snowboard and see my friends who I miss soooo much. I didn't go on holiday this year so it's 2 years worth of holiday money really.
As for us, we are ok for now but will really have to cut back if DH loses his DJing job. But the massive amount on rent and mortgage is the reason we need to live together again really...we've even talked about selling or renting out our house if I can get down to live with DH.
Thanks for the recipe...I've never tried lentils before.Reduction in daily mortgage interest since October 23 (new mortgage) - £2.36 July 25

Not knocking you having a hol love. Heck. I wish i had done more of it before the kids really. Our treats are pretty abysmal. Booze and chocolate mainly. I don't even spend my 40p a week treat on a telly guide anymore. The odd meal out, but not that frequently. Fish and chips - a couple of times this year. I'm not sure i can cut any more corners unless i become a naturist.
Never tried lentils? I lived on them virtually once my veggie uni housemates introduced them to me. Lovely. Some people find them a bit hard to eat.DH always thought them a bit bland. Add a spoon of marmite during cooking and it adds some flavour, or cook in some stock. If you add some cumin and serve with toast and lemon wedges you can say it is lebanese style soup.
Do you eat other beans and pulses? Butter beans and chickpeas are another staple nowadays in our house. Add some veggies and a tin of tomatoes, or even some chicken or sausages and makes a tasty casserole. You are going to have some great fun when you get your slow cooker.:D0 -

No problem for me with spuds, I wonder if it's different brands of SC?
Lentils: no need to presoak (unlike lots (all?) of other pulses) but particularly with green and black ones just make sure they're fully cooked. Won't do you any harm but will give you a bbit of tummy ache. Don't bother with tinned lentils either, they're super quick and easy to cook from driedUpdating soon...0
