Just got mine with Endsleigh and it covers my laptop and accidental damage £48. It includes loadsa stuff like walk-in theft cover and holiday insurance. I think it is well worth it.0

Did you get a second quote to see how much another company would cost?
As Saxon includes all the usual stuff such as walk-in theft etc. But Saxon also offers free accidental damage cover, keycover (for locks etc), damage to rooms, legal fees just have a look at the website and see!

yeh i did, and it was not good, cos i only need to insure my laptop for £200, thank you ebay, and i did not want it covered for £1250, its too much, i dont think they cover laptops over 3 months old.0

I'm going to Cardiff and the room is covered by Endsleigh included in the fees already but i have been kind of wondering if it's worth getting different/better insurance as an alternative :S

Have a look a bit further down this board, there are a couple of recent threads relating to this and the other companies to look at are Saxon and eandl (I believe). There are links to these in the other threads.
OK, have found the other most recent threads:
Looking for student insurance
Student possessions insurance
Can't find the one which mentions paying monthly, will go and have another hunt ...
Here it is: student room insurance - that's the one which specifically mentions paying monthly, so could be a good deal for those who only need it while on campus.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I got a quote of £156 from Endsleigh for my daughter which covered £4000 worth of possessions, accidental damage, vacation cover and portable computer cover.
Saxon quoted £83 for £10000 worth of possessions, accidental cover and portable computer cover. I don't know if vacation cover is included and their office is closed.
Does anyone know of any major differences between Saxon and Endsleigh?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I have just insured with Saxon, which seemed to be the cheapest I could find. There policy actually seems a lot more inclusive than most e.g. up to £10000 total possesions covered by default, whereas with Endsleigh etc. you need to say if you want £2000, £3000, £4000 etc.
The CDs/DVDs problem is simple to solve - leave your original CDs/DVDs at home, take copies with you (or put them on your computer or whatever). Then if they get nicked there isn't even any need to claim on the insurance. As far as I'm aware there is absolutely nothing illegal about making a "backup" copy of a CD you bought.
It's also worth noting that Saxon are basically a broker for Norwich Union insurance, a major insurer so there shouldn't be any problems if you have to claim etc.
Pam, according to the Saxon Student Shield policy document, contents are insured against accidental loss (inc. theft) and damage:· whilst in your room or any place of residence at
which you are temporarily residing during the
period of Insurance;
· whilst in your custody or control in any building on
campus during published term time;
· whilst securely locked in College or University
designated storage areas on campus outside
published term time;
· whilst in direct transit between your room and your
permanent home address in the UK at the beginning
and end of published term time.
I don't know if the "whilst securely locked...outside...term time" bit compares with Endslegh's vacation cover? Or if you're allowed to leave stuff in your room, I think it's insured anyway as long as you can still be considered to be "temporarily residing" there. You have to notify them if your room is unoccupied for more than 60 days, so I imagine that implies they're not bothered if it's unoccupied for less than that time!student100 hasn't been a student since 2007...0 -
my daughter is starting next week and her uni. accommodation rent includes cover with Saxon - it is called student sheild personal possessions insurance.
This gives her unlimited cover for her possessions, maximum value per item £250. Lap top needs to be covered seperately at a cost of £20 - no limit on its value.
Is this a good deal?0 -
Most of the sites I have looked at are for students that are living in rented accomodation or in halls of residence. Does anyone know where I can get insurance as I still live at home...
My laptop is worth about £1800 (without software) and I need to get it covered.0
