Student possessions insurance

Options
I have been looking at student bank accounts and I think the best deal I can find is Smile, but unlike the others Smile offer no Student Possession Insurance, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for Possession Insurance (or a better Student Account if you know of one).

You can buy possession insurance from anyone, doesn't have to be your bank...

Endsleigh is the standard, recommended by the NUS (no doubt due to a sizeable sponsorship I expect...) but they're probably not the cheapest.

Martin has an article on the main site about student bank accounts, I imagine he will be reviewing it before the next academic year.

    Hi all,
I've had my student possessions insurance with Endsleigh for the past two years. However, after buying a new computer, it went up from £46 to £133. I think it's too much to pay £90 to insure a laptop! Does anyone know of any other student possession insurance company? Which ones are good?

    Thanks!

Are you covered on your parents household insurance by any chance?? I know that when I was in uni, my mum called the insurance company and they did add it to the policy for a few pounds, and I was covered when I was unfortunatley burgled during my first year.

I'd recommend getting one of those laptop desk locks you can get, so it is really difficult to steal incase of burglary, I didnt have one and they simply ripped it out of the wall after I had stupidly left it on the desk when I went out into town. My room was locked however, so that is an issue they might draw your attention to.

If you really dont want to pay insurance on the laptop, then id recommend hiding it very well if you leave the room, it seems that often, in student places, burglaries happen fast because they know there are a lot of people around who may come back at any minute, fortunately in my case they didnt rip the room apart, they simply took what was visible. Luckily, my jewellery was hidden really well, so that was fine.

Im not advocating not getting insurance, as students and flatmates can be notoriously dizzy, leaving doors and windows open or unlocked etc, and if the laptop was expensive, then £90 isnt that much compared to the cost of replacing the item. Incidentally - did you think about getting a desktop instead? Ive found mine to be virtually steal proof as it is so big and heavy, where my laptop was taken without any effort whatsoever, and the lack of mobility is made up by the additional effort required for anyone else to have it away.

To sum - try parents insurance, it might be a lot cheaper!

I went with Saxon Direct, and my insurance was half the price it would've been with Endsleigh! And at the Fresher's Fair I had a nice debate with the Endsleigh man, and he tols me that Saxon Direct are better.

saxon direct are hopeless - maximum limit on CDs/DVDs/ etc is £500 and it can't be increased :( I run a music webzine so have a ridiculous number of CDs - probably worth in the region of £1000-2000 - Some of their limits are completely unfeasible..

Have you investigated a stand alone policy for your laptop, covering loss theft and damage?

Not got any specific info but I know they exist and they are not very expensive much less than the amount your insurance company want to add tothe main policy.

I can't get on my parent's insurance as they don't live in this country, would have been the easiest otherwise.

And where would you get a standalone policy for a laptop?

I'm on my mum's so can't really help, but I'm sure £133 is way too much. Have you tried hunting through the insurance section on here? http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance it may be that 'normal' insurance is cheaper. Make sure your room locks indiviual from the rest of the house - this will put the quote down.
BTW, if you're gonna hide stuff - hide it in a minging place, not many theifs will rumage through your dirty pants in the laundry basket for the hope of a laptop!! :rotfl:
  • I spent a few hours on this last week. Here is a sumamry of my findings.
    1. If you are a mature student some insurance companies will view you more favourably.
    2. For basic cover the HSBC were the cheapest but sting you for 63 pounds for your laptop
    3. Overall Endleigh are the cheapest but given they were absolutely useless last time I was a student (10 years ago) I will avoid them like the plague.
    4. I'm going to go with Royal and Sun Alliance (Cover4students.com) which is a little more expensive than Endsleigh but I don't have any predjudices against them.

just gonna give my experience with endsleigh as some of it seems rather negative. I paid about £100 for my insurance in the first year, very glad i did too. one night someone left the back door unlocked and we had quite a bit of stuff nicked, i lost about £600 of stuff, games consoles dvds etc so phoned up endsleigh. their CS was very helpful, i wasnt sure i'd actually be covered as the door was not locked, it was left open after a drunken night, and i told them honestly what had happened. they said it wasnt a problem and i should make a claim, gave them police number and filled in a claim, they covered it all, replaced the games console and gave me cash for the rest of the stuff, the claim was sorted in under a month which seemed pretty impressive to me, very happy with them.
