    Does anyone else fancy hot buttered toast when the beautiful smell starts just before the loaf is finished:p

    The hole in the bottom doesn't bother us either, perhaps cuz my philosophy has always been "It's for going in your belly, not a beauty parade!":rotfl:

    buttered warm bread fresh out of the panny and strawberry jam *yum yum*

    and the hole in the middle dont bother me either, like you say its goin in ya belly not on a parade :)

    Yes, you do get a hole in the bottom of the loaf. It doesn't bother me, it's just a little bit torn at the bottom of a couple of slices, but you can take the dough out and cook it in the tin with the paddle removed, or a few people just use the breadmaker for the dough and then bake in their own oven.
    I'm not too sure at what stage you remove the dough, but I'm sure it's somewhere in this thread, if you've got the time to read right through. Hope somebody comes along with more specific information
    I remove the paddle after the last kneading, almost no hole at all:T

    Please help. After reading the comments on this site I went out yesterday and bought a panasonic sd 255 breadmaker. I attempted to make a wholemeal loaf last night and after 5hrs it hadn't risen and came out like a house brick. Undounted I tried a basic white loaf on rapid bake this morning and that was the same.

    I have adehered strictly to the recipe guide in the panasonic book and to the measurements.

    The ingredients I have used are:

    Tesco strong white flour
    Tesco strong stoneground wholemeal flour.
    Tesco sachets of dried fast bake yeast.
    Salt, pepper and butter.

    Any advice please?

    Maybe it does not like the Tesco yeast?

    I always use the Doves Farm Easy/Quick something or other (blend?) in the orange vacuum pack. Lasts for ages. BTW made a spelt loaf overnight. Apart from the paddle getting stuck it was very nice and different. Quite moist. Made anice change. Not everyone's cup of tea of course and spelt flour is rather expensive.

    Try making a bog standard, 4 hour, white loaf

    If it works OK then you have to proceed from there, if it does not work then as sugested by others

    I think it's walk before run sometimes, the wholemeal is always denser & heavier, and fast bake can be tricky, but as elona says, if not risen then yeast is first suspect

    I've never yet tried a 100% wholemeal loaf, but I was getting a lot of loaves like yours at the beginning with my panny.

    I am sure my panny has a temperamental disorder. I threatened it with the boot sale, and it seems to be a bit more reliable since(touch wood and hope it didn't hear me) I have changed nothing, and I still can't always guarantee a great loaf, but at least I get an edible loaf.
    I do think that my machine is very sensitive to draughts and cold weather, I now use it only in the living room, and heaven help anyone who leaves a door open. I also cover the top of the machine with a towel to stop any draught getting in. Okay, so maybe I'm a bit paranoid. I've read all about the people on here who love their machines while I'm still just tolerating mine, but hope that our relationship will develop further.

    As farway says try making a basic white loaf, then try replacing the white flour with wholemeal. I have read somewhere in this forum about using vit c tablets to help wholemeal bread rise, but I haven't tried that myself. Maybe someone else can provide further information on that one.

    Doves organic white was only 62p in Tesco so I gave it a go - what a big improvement. Had been using Tesco own up till now but will now stick with Doves. fifi35 - I don't think they recommend the 'fast bake' yeast satchets for breadmakers try the orange Dove's quick yeast it costs about 93p and really does last for ages.

    Where in the recipe does it say pepper?
    I see you have not used sugar(most recipe's require sugar)
    I know this sounds silly but you don't say if you have used any water.
    I use Tesco dried yeast & it has worked fine for me, I have made dozens with this. Also make sure you put the ingredients in the order they are in the recipe or it will not work so good, the yeast has not to touch any liquid before mixing starts. So the yeast goes in first.
