Hi all- just checking in, hope you are all OK, especially Winebox (hugs).

Fay, saw your post about Phd's- I took 6 yrs to finish mine so no hot tips I'm afraid!!! I was drinking alot back then and the worst thing was sitting down with the wine every night thinking I'd written something profound and philosophical only to find in the cold light of day I'd written a load of rubbish and having to start again- human geography, foucault and wine are not a good mix. Have you talked this through with your supervisor? I do remember periods where I just got stuck and had to put it all away for a while, but I also remember days when the whole house was covered in half written chapters and I just felt like crying- best of luck with it.

Biscotte- I found most of my fears reduced or disappeared when I stopped drinking, most of the time I was drinking I spent my time being anxious and half frightened to death and worried- now its out of the equation I'm not scared of much at all anymore.
  • sooooooooooooooooo- who is still up for being a AF muskahound this evening??

Ta E - wine and willow don't work much either, after the first glass, I coudlnt give two hoots. Not great when it pays the bills

I don't envy people having to write long essays like that.

I am not doing too well at all, I have drunk the past two days and have some left over in the fridge but I might go and get a couple of cans from the shop.

Good luck to all the people doing better than me, which seems to be everyone else on here.:T

Hi 115k- I think you are doing really well, because at least you are thinking about it, and loads of people who struggle with drink don't give it a second thought until its too late- I read earlier about the rise in liver disease in young women who started off as binge drinkers- its really scary that young people are becoming ill so early on- one of the girls interviewed drank a half bottle of vodka BEFORE she went out, and so did quite a few of her friends- scary, I sometimes think schools need to be getting in people like us to do the health education stuff, at least we could tell them the truth and what might happen- my eldest lad has never had a drink and at 15 I think thats pretty rare-why? because his aunty died of liver failure at 36 and he remembers the 2 years he spent watching me drinking to excess and all the trouble and distress it caused- we were talking about it the other day and he just said, 'mum, after what our family have been through because of alcohol. I can't think of one reason why it would be a good idea to ever touch the stuff and I don't want too'- we all think we have hidden it well, but sometimes we forget the little ones and how awful and worrying our behaviour is to them. All we can do is sort ourselves out, its the least we can do- I always wanted my kids to have a childhood they would remember with fondness and affection and I blew it, its tainted with bad memories and I'm going to try my best to put that right, hopefully its not too late.
  • Have just noticed this thread but never read it before... I have had a bet that I wouldn't have a drink for a year for £100 which started on 1 January 2008, and amazingly I've stuck to it!

I calculate that over the year assuming I paid for 4 bottles of wine a week at £14 each bar prices (probably quite a conservative estimate), and then took a taxi home at £15 a time 3 times a week because I was too plastered to get on the bus, and then either bought a takeaway/hangover mop up food at £20 a week.... I have saved myself £6,292 this year.

And that is definitely a conservative estimate, leaving out the crazy drunken cash point withdrawls on a credit card, buying two bottles at a time rather than one to hit the minimum credit card spend limit, deciding to treat everyone to a round of (expensive) shots etc etc...

    Scary!

Thanks Eselt, that is sweet of you to say. I have actually had my liver tested and the GP said it was okay and there were no problems but it was not really good like all my other test results for thyroid, cholesterol and so on. Have others on here had their livers tested?

That is great debtdesperado, you must have saved a fortune. It's depressing to think of how much money spent on booze adds up.

    Evening folks,

We are the lucky ones really to have realised we need to watch our relationship with alcohol. I find it super scary the number of folks who think that heavy binge drinking is 'OK, cause that's what everyone does'.

I"m going to bed now very early as I have been super busy all day and just done two hours of German!!!

BTW, I too have PhD from way back when. I handed in my notice on my flat at the end of my three years research so I had three months to write up and submit before I moved south to be with BF (now DH) - was a very good incentive when young though I wouldn't unreservedly recommend intentional homelessness as a good idea.

Could we have some Drmuskahounds or is that getting way too complicated?
  • Hiya E and Bis - ah friad me thinks will never be a dr - partly cos I am unorganised partly cos I am too lazy - i think of it as a job that pays the bills - but my word its hard work. German though omg!!

Agree I do think you are right, if we have looked and said hold on wait up - then its great for us all.

Am finding having to feed my lodger breakfast is a good non alcohol thing, as making someones breakfast at 7am isnt conjusive to cracking open a bottle of wine x
