 OMG, perhaps AA's not such a good idea then?!

Jo, I've just finished reading the John Coats book and he reccommends AA which was what set me thinking about it. But maybe, as you've all found, it's an acquired taste (sorry to use a drinkingphrase!).

Eselte, I was thinking about some of the things you mentioned the other day ie ongoing cravings etc and then I realised the only alternative to fighting it was giving in:mad: and, like you, I don't want to go there again:eek: .

Well, to happier things-day 13 for me today (oh no!), 1 day away from a whole 2 weeks!!!:T :T . How shall I celebrate.....a nice cup of coffee I think!

Hope everyone has a good evening and good luck to those who are struggling, see you soon, Ali x.

I like eselt's posts because it's so often stuff that I'd write!

when she first started posting I had to keep checking I'd not written it myself and forgotten....

anyway...AA was a step for me...I didn't like the full package and to be honest didn't really try to.....it was part of the beginnings of the understanding that I needed to come to at the time.....just sitting there and having "me time" thinking about the issue was useful in itself....hearing others talk about their issues helped me understand the big picture and realise that I wasn't the only one who had these feelings...I knew I wasn't but had never heard anyone else's point of view....

I took what I needed from the meeting but as for the whole deal...no....not for me.....I think that most people would gain something from going - if only few a few times...as for 90 times in 90 days...maybe some feel they need to but that in itself is asking a lot.....the most I did was twice a week for about 5 weeks...then for once a month for about 3 months.....just to touch base as it were....

Thanks Bismark, that's what I was wondering, maybe I'll go for a bit and have a think about stuff. I feel like I might need something to keep me focussed over the next few weeks and maybe I'll find something in it longer term or maybe not.

I was certainly not in it for any of the higher power stuff....I had to be careful with the things I said sometimes as I could have upset people if I'd just let fly BUT sitting and listening is good....I heard things that made my jaw drop and saw people who'd lived through hell and seen the other side....there were all kinds of emotions floating round and every so often you'd hear one that resonated within yo and you'd learn a little more about "it" and yourself...in the end the battle's yours...going to AA gave me some tips and understanding to even up the odds...I'm sure it helped me although not in the way that it would have expected to...

Can I jump in here & add my 2p's worth about the12 steps?
My son had a very bad time a couple of years ago, binge drinking, suicide attempts, self-destructive behaviour - it was horrendous & I was desperate & heartbroken. A friend told me to go to WGCADA who provide a family support programme & it has been fantastic. It's based on the 12 step programme used by Al-anon. I was brought up atheist & was very resistant to the higher power thing, but it honestly can mean anything you want it to be - I name it as the universe, or the cosmos, or it can be good, orderly direction - it doesn't have to be the old guy sitting in heaven with a beard & white robes.

I know al-anon is totally different to AA but the 12 steps are basically the same & i never thought I'd be promoting them  but I am!

  • Morning all, well, I managed another AFD :T Actually not finding it hard at all this week, think now I have set my mind to dieting it is actually helping me to resist the temptation - too many calories!!

Hope everyone is keeping to the straight and narrow:D

Just a quick word about AA - it obviously works for a lot of people so we shouldn't knock it, I have tried it and personally didn't find it useful but each to their own and if it helps even one person to overcome their demons then it is worth it's existence in my book!
