The giving up/cutting down alcohol support thread!

Hi everyone!
This is my first post on the forums.
I decided to not drink anymore last Saturday (2nd August) and havent succumbed! I am so proud - my job is in advertising, and the people I work with really do take it to the extremes, in that 'well we work in advertising, going out and getting drunk is what we do' - but does it have to be?
Basically after a few too many horrible incidents resulting from having too much to drink, I decided it wasnt worth it any more. No more bruises, or expensive cab journeys.
I am amazed at the reaction I am getting though - a girl I work with also wanted to quit, but started again by Tuesday, and on Wednesday tried to get me to drink with her - I think it would make her feel less guilty. I am still the same person, still happy to go out and have fun, but when you turn down alcohol its like being a leper. Everyone thinks its weird.
But hey, I just wanted to say hi and think everyone is really brave for posting their stories and sharing with other people0 -
Hello Pjc33 - Just wanted to say I think you are spot on when you say your friend wanted to feel less guilty. You could always say what I say - that you are on tablets and can't drink (my hope is eventually people will just accept it), I also feel guilty for all the times I've poured wine down people's throats. I've lost 1 1/2 stone in about 6 - 8 weeks, just by not drinking; I hadn't realise how much of an appetite food gives you. Advertising is a really hard one to stop drinking in, so good on you and good luck!

Well done Molly Polly- what a test to PASS with flying colours:T :T :T
Welcome all newbies and old friends- keep posting everyone (wheres Bis with his wise words...I miss them at the moment...:o )
pjc33- they'll soon start to notice how much more energized you are, how your attitude and ability to work improves and how just because you are in a job which has a reputation for drinking, doesn't mean to say you have to conform to the stereotype- in fact I think people will respect you more for making a decision which goes against the norm and standing by that.
On more important issues, coke floats with mint vienetta and limeade don't work!!!! They don't just 'don't work' they are bloody vile so its back to the drawing board again- OH said 'you're looking for a replacement for vodka and coke and it aint gonna happen- get over it' and I think he might be right. Oh well I tried!!!!!
Well done everyone- keep it up!!!!0 -

Hi all,
Am a great lurker on here and am really inspired by so many of your stories.
But Jo, I really do take my hat off to you, you've really achieved so much, wishing you all the best, good luck and God bless for the future.0 -
Eselt, sorry but that does sound disgusting
Molly, dunno, but you didn't miss much, they pretty much demonstrated what we would imagine a heart attack to feel like and said to call an ambulance even if in doubt.
Rosie, awww shucks, thanks
Off to bed now, £63.00 saved (not spent!) so far, I'll update my sig in the morning :money:
Night all

Jo ,I'm glad you didnt cave in .You must be feeling really proud of yourself.
Yesterday at the wedding was really hard. The hardest day since giving up.
We were sat 4 to a small round table with three bottles of wine per table:eek:
The sherry and champagne also flowed freely all day.
Boy was I tempted ,as we were even in walking (staggering????)distance of home.
I decided to just have a small glass of champagne to toast the Bride & groom  but some one was watching over me.
My brother in law said 'will it be the first of 'Oh , ive had one so one more wont hurt?...... and I new it would, so I sheepishly raised my glass and then poured the champagne into my DH glass.
How I survived I'll never know but I did.
DH could hardly stand when I drove him home;) :A
I am sooooooooooooo proud.
Its all thanks to you peeps on here that I stay on the straight and narrow.
THANK YOU ALL XXXXXXXX
See you later

awesome.....we do need to get over this aspect of "it's so we can drink it" - especially when it's free and expected of us....well - it's not "free" as there is a cost - potentially huge....sometimes life-threatening...yup...that was one of those moments when it's all pretty much down to you and your inner strength....thankfully they don't come too often....
well done again! For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 20070 -

wise words? shucks....don't know about that....you guys seem to know what you're doing!
I hope OH was more supportive than he sounded there...there is no replacement for V & C - he's right but there are ways of doing it....was pondering this complicated issue over the weekend and replicating isn't the aim but you can get a similar rush if you down a coke quickly....you don't get the kickback that you would from a V & C but it does give you a bit of a buzz without the odd feeling of the V hitting you.....still better to stick to coffee though....or a herby tea...take careFor what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 20070
