Hi Simon,
Welcome:wave:
Well done for yesterday!
Is it possible for you to go see your GP today? I'm concerned about the shakes and sweats, I get shakes but not full DTs and don't get sweats. If you've been drinking heavily like that for years and suddenly stop, it can be very dangerous and you must be checked out first. Don't want to stop you at your first hurdle but it's important you get help with this.
We are all here for you should you need to rant, or need support. Good luck Simon, we are with you every step of the way :T
xx
Hi Jo, despite my drinking habits my body seems to have coped very well :rotfl:
I had a routine check up at the docs a couple of months ago and all was well. Will see how I get on tonight and if the same I will certainly book an appointment.0 -

We still have a bottle in the fridge and a half bottle my neighbour gave me yesterday. . I don't honestly think I can start afresh until its gone!GIVE IT AWAY!
I am so stupid ! NO YOU'RE NOT. You were ambushed and your defences weren't ready...I suspect you drank for the benefit of others - to make them feel better. Did you actually enjoy the wine? A hard part in all this is doing it on your terms - whatever you can live with and works...you have to write your own manual and create/copy your own defences when it gets sticky.
Mental Note....BHB - MUST TRY HARDER...... ACTUALLY MUST TRY !!!!!!! It's not about trying really it's about helping yourself make the right choice when dangerous situations arise..and they will...
I should be at the counsellers now - but I canceled it. I am going to make an appointment with my GP in a minute to see if there is another counseller that I can see instead, as I just didn't feel seeing that particular one was was right.
Jo - Cracking job - keep up the good workDon't worry about the cutting down to 2 cans yet. See how you feel on the day and what your counseller says.
Next question - How do you spell counseller, councellor ...counseler ??? I'm sure I must be on American time - I keep getting alsorts of spellings bouncing up here ??
Councellor for local councellor...counsellor for someone giving counsel...
take care and live for today! For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 20070 -

I'm not saying you're unfit Simon! Just if you drink heavily for a period of time then stop your body can not cope....have a look at this link about delerium tremens (DTs)

You may be advised to cut down gradually or be given something to help with the withdrawals.
Its a very very dangerous condition.

Morning all, just thought I'd tag on to this thread
I had my first night off the booze last night for god knows how long. I have been drinking heavily for years but recently with money problems etc it has got worse. I regularly drink 20 units a night and 30 or more a night over the weekend
I must admit last night was pretty tough, as I was getting the shakes and sweats, had to go sleep in the spare room to save worrying the OH.
Does this get worse as the days go by or is the first night the hardest?
I am also worrying about the weekend, would you suggest to keep of the booze altogether, what I don't want is to slip back into my usual routine. I must admit the thought of not drinking (at this point in time) doesn't bother me and apart from the shakes last night I didn't actually consider a drink.
Let's see where we go from here
Regards Simon
you are most welcome! I'd certainly recommend you see a doctor regarding withdrawal...your body has an expectation of what it will be getting and it can experience severe shock if it doesn't get its fix.
Unofficially I'd recommend a heck of a lot of water to cleanse your system and some vitamins and St Johns Wort but I'd certainly see a doctor and explain what's going on.
Think about the weekend when you get there....if you stop drinking now, your body and mind will be busy enough adjusting themselves...

Thanks Jo and Bis. I see what you mean about the DT's  Will see how I get on tonight and if I am the same will go to the docs tomorrow. I must admit though I felt exactly the same when I quit smoking, the first day was horrendous and I had to leave work early due to being totally disorientated, also got the shakes with that. After a day it all went well and I quit 30 a day for 6 years, but started again last Christmas
Maybe it's just my bodies way of getting rid of the toxins0 -
God I hate naggin  but, Simon, is there no way you can't pop into the docs today and mention that you are quitting just so he/she knows and can give you advice? I really am worried about you.DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0

Ok guys point taken
Will speak to the doctors to try to get an appointment today, they usually take about 2 weeks though.
Failing getting to see the doc and assuming the DT's continue would it be best to say have half of what I usually drink and go from there? The reason I wanted to stop altogether is that if I have one drink I can't stop until I am full of beer and can't drink anymore. I have hidden this from my partner but I guess it is time to 'fess up.
Thanks Simon0 -

just from a quick google..you wouldn't be the first to go this way....and then how would your OH feel?[/FONT]For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 20070
