After my ponderings of "why do I drink" over the last few months, I was thinking of asking all the regulars to sum up in one word why they drank.

Or try and come up with a top 5 triggers....and then I considered how complex the whole issue is...your post brought me back 16 years to the premature death of my father when I was in my early twenties. Such things change everything and sometimes these events need years to go through the system. I remember well a simple feeling of not caring as there didn't really seem much point.

It seemed very unfair that a life can go so quickly and so unexpectedly and it is unbalancing. There aren't many days that go by without me wishing I could have a conversation with him about things as they are now.

    But I can't.

All I can do is look at what's ahead of me and do what's right for me and my family.

My first husband died at the age of 27 when I was 20.
Being alone every night with my grief and an eighteen month old chid was definitely the start of the slippery slope for me.

    Morning folks

Ok - here's another poser (similar to Bismarck's trifle dilemma)

Friday night being curry night, you ring and place your usual order. You wander up to get it at the appropriate time. Now normally, if they are a bit pushed, they offer you a half lager (on them) while you wait. You are fullyl prepared for this and have your polite'no' all ready :D

However this time, for the first time, they just wander over and hand you half a lager without even offering first!!!!

    Do you;

    a) politely refuse, even though they've already poured it
    b) accept it, put it on the table, then leg it as soon as their backs are turned
    c) take few sips out of politeness, then leg it as soon as your takeaway arrives
    d) What the heck!! It's Friday night, neck it!

    :o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o

answers on a postcard to the usual address..... answer next time I'm on :D

    Morning all

There's a reminder of the question......

Bismarck - they know where I live  and it's about a hundred yards away, so the driving thing won't wash

    Soooooooo............................

    *drum roll*

    The answer is..........

    b) accept it, put it on the table, then leg it as soon as their backs are turned :j :j :j :j :j :j :j

Feel bad in one way, turning down their hospitality, but :j :j in another, that I had a half in my hand and didn't drink it. OK - it was lager and I rarely touch the stuf, but still......

So - probably for the first time since I was unemployed and couldn't afford it

    :j :j Day 8!!!! :j :j

    well done TNG~!

My kids have been watching Lord of the Rings recently and seeing it with fresh eyes has been interesting....

When it first came out there were references to Gollum being a Ring junkie and the Ring itself having addictive properties...

in the first hour or so, there's the bit where Frodo offers Gandalf the Ring and he's sorely tempted but says no...

    Has echoes of

"You cannot offer me this drink, barman!! I would take it and mean to do good but it is altogether evil.."

Am I demonising drink? Possibly...I'm really demonising its capacity to destroy and change people from who they really are.

Anyway, don't feel bad....they'll probably stick it under the counter for the next person's pint of shandy.....

the important thing is you did what's right for you :T
For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 2007

    That's a good question!

I feel a sense of achievement. I woke early at the weekend, which doesn't normally happen, or if it does, I feel shattered.

It's hard to say if I feel healthier. I guess its still very much 'early days'

the important thing is you did what's right for you

Thanks Bismarck - you're absolutely right!!

Still sat in my drawer :o - page 108. It makes as much sense as the stop smoking book IMO. Yes, totally agree with what he says, but doesn't quite 'click' for some reason.......

I think I'll get his other book, though I suspect that will say the same things, but using more words......

  • Hi all, Hope you are all doing ok. I've been enjoying the sun and got back into runing 3 times a week. It was hubby's birthday at the weekend, managed to get through it with only 1 bottle of wine and a pint with a meal. Interestingly we went to son's 1st Holy Communion yesterday and hubby stated how much he enjoyed the non alcoholic Grape juice, so may give that a go:D Though would have to hide it till kids had gone to bed, as they were al knocking it back too:eek: :rotfl: Anyhoo hope you al have a lovely week. Summer appears to be here:j Take Care xx

I have read it cover to cover and I am afraid to say I could not relate to it at all  I thought the references to pilots navigating were very bizarre!!:o back to the drawing board for me after a weekend of alcohol induced haze - oops!!!:o
