Go see your GP and see if he can refer you, other than that, go on to your local councils website and see if there's information about their drug and alcohol service. If all else fails, phone Drinkline, this is what I did all those years ago and they gave me the number to my local government based counselling service. Good luck hun :)

  • Thanks Jo, I will have a look at drinkline tonight, I suppose I feel a bit silly going to the docs, my OH and friends just says oh just stop drinking so much you don't need to see anyone but the thing is I do!!! I have been burying my head in the sand for ages now and I just want to sort myself out:o

I can sympathise with you, you have no need to feel silly if you feel you've got a problem. Although I must say the first time I went to my docs about it he actually said the words.....'just don't buy it'  talk about sensitive

Don't worry about what anyone says or thinks, you know your own mind and if you need help and support, go get it :)

You should have said "Silly me. Why didn't I think of that!"

  • OMG what a stupid man!!! If it was as easy as not buying it I would be sober as a judge - oh and skinny as a rake to boot if I could talk myself out of crisps/dips, takeaways etc.... what a complete gem of advice that was :rotfl:

Winebox Thank you so much for this honest post. You're not alone. I was a home-alone drinker. I would say that over the last 18 months I've been suffering with memory loss after drinking................those empty crisp wrappers are such a give away!! I too would get up early and convince myself I was right as rain and set out to prove it by making myself busy and act lively........................guess it was a combination of guilt and the remnants of the alcohol in my body. It was then I started to wake up to the fact that I was addicted to alcohol. I then spent the last 12 months trying to give up, but found I couldn't. If I did abstain, then I found that I wanted a drink twice as badly..................couldn't wait til the evening and then asking myself if 6:30 was too early to crack open a bottle........................then numbness of the brain..........................sheer bliss !! :o
I found the Allen Carr book so helpful................gave up straightaway and find that I no longer crave a drink.....................can't believe it was so instantaneous. I wish you the very best with the Allen Carr book. Big hugs xx

Er, rings lots of bells. Pealing madly in fact.
Yesterday's brewing row with OH ended up going nuclear - OH being massively unreasonable (yes honestly), I can cope with justified criticism but always go to pieces when someone accuses me of stuff that ain't true, & then won't listen. So go to pieces I did with messy results. Things still strained this morning so spent miserable morning in work (brewers blues) trying not to blub & being extremely grateful it was so quiet as brain not functioning. We have kissed & made up now. Still I am determined not to have a drink today. I take DD to Brownies on a Monday & as OH lives near to where that is I go round to his for dinner rather that do 2 10-mile round trips. so test (1) is not to have my usual glass of wine with dinner & test (2) is not to drop into the Co-op on my way to pick DD up! Once home I'm stuck as even I have not yet plumbed the depths of leaving an 8 year old on her own in the house even if asleep in bed while I drive 10 miles for a bottle of wine, & the village pub is closed on Mondays. Right now I don't even want a drink so don't think it'll be a problem but let's not get cocky there's a lot of day left yet.
BHB did you get your counselling today?
How's it going with you Jo? Saw your advice re Drinkline will keep that in reserve. Meanwhile off for a cup of tea & Allen Carr.;)

Hi all, well went on Cousin's stag day & really enjoyed it, especially as I don't go out much now. Went to the town 20 miles away(don't like to say where as I don't want to be sussed out by anyone that I know that may check this forum out) & there were only 2 pubs within close proximaty, so we got a taxi to a town nearby & spent a couple of hours there, before getting the train back to our city & having a few more drinks around the train station. I was battered by 730 & bought a kebab for DD & myself(OH didn't want one)!! Strangely for me I feel fine today but wouldn't like to get into that state week in week out. Saying that I don't think that I can face a beer today so after 4 NDDs in May, will hopefully start June with a NDD!! Good luck all & I will catch up with your posts shortly!!
Hi all, well after the stag day on Saturday I managed to stay off the beer yesterday, saying that OH wasn't feeling too good so didn't have a drink so that helped me. This month I am going to have a go at seeing how many units I actually consume. Hopefully I don't have any nights that I can't remember how much I consume! The recommendation is 3 units a day so by rights I shouldn't consume more than 90! So so far I have drank 0/90 units!!
