Buying a slow cooker (which? & why?)

I have the large MR one and really like using it. OH however says it has a funny smell to it
.
Is there one smaller than 3.5L? I have a wheelchair bound friend who is thinking about buying one but as she lives on her own and is a vegetarian wonders if she would use it enough. She makes soup in the winter and I thought it would be brilliant for that sort of thing. Any suggestions welcomed:).0 -
Lakeland have a 1.5 litre one for £19.95:
https://www.lakeland.co.uk
(then search for slow cooker)
It has removable bowl and has automatic setting (from the picture)
Empire stores also have a 1.5 one for £12.99:
https://www.empirestores.co.uk
(then search for ZC5744)
It also has a removable bowl, but can't be sure about an automatic setting.
Probably would have to add postage on top of those prices.0 -

I was stood in Robert Dyas having a dilemma about which to buy between the 3.5L MR and the 3.5L Paul Rankin one. When I read the 3.5L MR box carefully and it says it only has a 2.5L capacity, whereas the Paul Rankin has the full 3.5L.

Hi
I want to buy a slow cooker not just for the economy but also for the convenience (hectic pace of life with small children).
There seem to be a variety of sizes available and I'm not sure which one to go for.
Generally at meal times we're feeding two or three adults and two small children. I don't want to buy a monstrosity of a cooker that takes up the entire kitchen but I don't want to spend money on a cooker that isn't big enough to serve our needs.
I should tell you that we eat reasonable portions and don't have seconds. Just in case you're thinking we have plates the size of dustbin lids!
From your collective experience, what capacity would you recommend?
Thanks in advance.

I have the Morphy Richards 6.5 litre as I can cook whole chicken or joints of meat in it as well as huge helpings of soup , stew or curry so that I can freeze a couple of servings if I want.
You do not have to fill it to the brim but just to half or three quarters full."This site is addictive!"

Hiya
We have a long thread about slow cookers and which to buy to suit your needs and so on.
I shall merge this thread with it shortly.

Thanks Elona,
I was just a bit concerned that the 6+ litre capacity would be too big, but I didn't take into account the possibility of freezing the extra.
Thanks again.

It is just as well that I did get a large slow cooker as DH comes downstairs at 7a.m. and then starts to eat anything that has been cooking overnight.
I wondered why the level of food in the slow cooker seemed to be less than I expected then found DH eating curry at 7a.m.!"This site is addictive!"

Hi squeaky,
Sorry. I didn't mean to cause you any inconvenience.
I'm afraid I was a bit impatient because I wanted to get out this afternoon and pick one up. I did a search for 'Which Slow Cooker' but 10 million responses were returned.
This money saving lark is taking over my life. I can only hope my family keep talking to me.
So anyway, I hope you can forgive me?

Hiya MM,
I am a recent SC convert and its great. There are 2 adults and 3 toddlers in our place and I plumed for the 6.5L MR one, its FANTASTIC!!!
It is big but not huge, I dont have a load of worktop space and it fits in just fine.
I cam do a curry (just an example) and get that nights meal plus an extra 2 meals (for the 2 adults) out of it. I freeze the extra which is great cause then I just grab something out of thefreezer in the morning and its defrosted ready to bung in the microwave at tea time. Its a real (and money) time saver.
I ordered mine from amazon, it was only £24.51 which includes delivery, for some reason the 6.5L was cheaper than the 3.5L one by more than £10 - weird.
I would go for the bigger, like a previous poster said, you dont have to fill it right up but if you do just freeze it for another day.
Its EASY PEASY
