Try to set a timer when settling down to read MSE as time just seems to whizz past whenever I come on here, and nothing gets done. ;)

Good one! I rely on a timer if I leave something on the cooker while I "just pop in" to MSE. The timer has saved many a burnt offering and ruined saucepan. The cat isn't too keen, but sitting up startled when it goes off is practically the only exercise he gets these days!

  • My OH thinks this is being very cheap but...I use J-cloths for most cleaning/dusting, and put them in with the tea towels and cleaning cloths once a week on a hot wash. OH says, "but that's the point, they're disposable!" I use them for a good few times before they need to be binned.
 I had no idea tha J cloths were meant to be disposable.

Do you mean that you just cut a bit of lemon and leave it at the bottom of your dustin to takle the smells. I have been searching for a way of cutting down the smell of my son's nappy bin. How long does the lemon work for. Will it last for a month?

Tee tree oil on a Tesco value microfibre cloth helps with nappy bins. Then you just wash the coth with the nappies for an extra bit if disinfectant.

  • If you can't finish a bottle of wine, you can freeze the leftovers into ice cubes. They are very handy to use when making gravy/stews.

To be able to find small screws and stuff easily in the garage or shed save a pile of jam jars/babyfood jars and screw the lids onto the underside of a shelf.
Put your little stuff in jars eg one for nails, screws, curtain hooks and then screw back onto lids.
You can easily see what you are looking for and can take the jar to where you are working.

Also works in the kitchen with herbs/stock cubes etc.

Another one which I haven't tried but I know someone who had the guts to do has done it. If you are waiting in the queue in the supermarket and they say that they are going to close it just as you get there try this. If you have frozen or chilled food say that you will leave it where it is and say that you are leaving. They are not allowed to put the food back so threating to leave it there means they get told off. a last resort after a hard day.

Having worked in a supermarket on a till (albeit not my real job), gave me a total new insight into what people will try on. What a lot of rubbish - no member of staff will be told off because trolley/basket shopping left. So threaten to leave it all you like. Doesn't affect the staff whatsoever.
Chilled/frozen foods will not be put back for sale after 15 mins of being left. Obviously most other things can be put back such as cans, jars, bread, eggs, packets.
Unfortunately, what most shoppers don't know that supermarket workers are paid low wages. Loyalty only works one way....and only for the benefit of the company. Some big companies like Somerfield have cut out paying weekend rates and public holiday rates.
I don't know how this company has got round it, but there are sure to be more. Makes me so angry.

If you have a small baby in a moses basket , old pillow cases can be used as ` fitted sheets`. Simply insert the curved visivent mattress in the case and it is tucked in neatly. Wonderful way to use up odd pillow cases and a boon when you have no more sheets.
  • If you have a juice extractor, line the 'bin' where all the pulp is collected with a plastic bag. When finished you can either reuse all the pulp to thicken soups/stews or throw it away. :)

You are not supposed to wash microfibre cloths with towelling, so unless your nappies are microfibre, would suggest that you use tea tree on some other kind of material, perhaps muslin cloth or an old terry face cloth.

When I was looking at this site to make sure we were doing everything possible to find the cheapest utilites provider, I remembered we had Econonmy 7!! Duoh. Not only that, we looked at the timer and it cuts in at 9pm at night. Other half explained this was because it is just a clunky mechanical device and not reliable. Result - we put dishwasher and washing machine on at night!
I urge everyone who is on Economy 7 to check when it cuts in (Other half has said we'll have to keep an eye on it as it is out of sinc and will move times)

can you tell me how i can work this out?! i have a feeling mine is out too! the light on the water heating box saying 'off peak availible' is on in the middle of the afternoon sometimes!
