Such a great thread!
I think a lot of it is learnt from Parents etc and you just end up doing it as habit!
I cant really add anything new, though I will say that I cut open toothpaste tubes or foundation makeup tubes to get the last bits out.
And as my mum used to, when baking, measure the flour/sugar into the scales first and then add the butter before putting into mixing bowl. Makes sure nothing is left behind and scales are clean!Bank Charges Claimed: 180

When you take off your rubber gloves and they're inside out, turn right way and swizzle round fast then squeeze like it is a balloon to get the fingers back out.
Dont blow into them or they will be wet inside.A printer at work showed me that one years ago.
When teaching toddlers to put on their own coats, lay the open coat out on the floor with sleeves out to the sides, toddler stands with his feet above the head area(collar or hood)looking at the upside down coat. Then he bends over and stuffs his hands into the sleeve holes and swoops it over his head, tada he has put it on all by himself.0 -
Another one for helping toddlers dress themselves - lay clothes out in the order they'll go on, i.e. put pants on top of trousers, vest/t-shirt on top of jumper, when you're putting clothes out on the bed. IYSWIM0

headchef wrote:When I was looking at this site to make sure we were doing everything possible to find the cheapest utilites provider, I remembered we had Econonmy 7!! Duoh. Not only that, we looked at the timer and it cuts in at 9pm at night. Other half explained this was because it is just a clunky mechanical device and not reliable. Result - we put dishwasher and washing machine on at night!
I urge everyone who is on Economy 7 to check when it cuts in (Other half has said we'll have to keep an eye on it as it is out of sinc and will move times)
recently seen on washing machine site, that it is not recommended to put machines on when you are out or at night - and yes i know it is cheaper and less noisy - but that, particularly old ones, are liable to spontaniously combust/develop electrical fault and catch fire...scary
he - website owner and washing machine repair man, says never leave them on when you are alseep/out.0 -

also keep empty butter wrappers in freezer for reuse as this, or for buttering cake tins. never throw them away0 -
Downsizing__for_sanity wrote:Rinse your plates under cold water before they go in to make your dishwasher work more effectively - so you can usually get away with a quick wash. Also, remember to empty the filter thingy often so it doesn't get clogged up.
My OH thinks this is being very cheap but...I use J-cloths for most cleaning/dusting, and put them in with the tea towels and cleaning cloths once a week on a hot wash. OH says, "but that's the point, they're disposable!" I use them for a good few times before they need to be binned.
i thought j cloths were meant to be reusable, or is that just me...saving the environment etc.0 -
Simple but effective.....
Squash the loo roll before you put it onto the holder. This way the looroll wont move so easily and therfor you (or your children) wont unravel several feet of paper by accident!

ooh cunning, never thought of that one...will hopefully stop the little one pulling off too much paper just to flush down the loo...0

ok, i know this is very basic tip, but as i turn the house upside down looking for a manual again.....
keep ALL instruction manuals in the same place, with the receipt stapled to it. then if it breaks, you know what might be wrong, and if it is still in warranty.
now i will go and practice this...
i will try harder0
