Very interesting stuff that, thanks. Thanks eveyone for your help, i shall be buying from the hdmi site now as Red Rose Exile said they had got from too.
    Hi,
I know this post is old and all that but I saw something obscene today in Comet and had to vent my frustration somewhere.
Anyway, its simply regarding the great HDMI cable price swindle! Honestly, I cant believe how some people get away with what they do!

The simple point is this, HDMI is a DIGITAL signal, that means if you can get the signal from one device to the other then it will work exactly the same regardless of what cable you use.
Im not saying there is no difference between the physical cables from cheap to expensive, what I am saying is that there wont be any difference between picture and audio quality from using a cheap cable or an expensive cable. THAT IS FACT!
If you dont believe me, go and buy your £150 HDMI cable and a £2.99 HDMI cable, try one and then try the other. If you can tell the difference then i'll hapily buy the £150 cable for you and a 60" TV to go with it

The fact of the matter is, because HDMI is digital, if the signal is getting to the TV its going to give the same results regardless of cable quality/price (and anyone who says it will is either mis-informed or trying to sell HDMI cables) This wasnt/isn't the same for analogue cables/signals but for digital it IS. If the signal doesnt get to the TV then cable is faulty, if the cable is of such poor quality to affect the signal to the extent that it wont get to the TV then the cable wouldnt be for sale, there would be no point in producing it and it most certainly wouldnt carry the HDMI logo either.

Now, someone mentioned cable lengths being an issue with signal degridation, again this isnt a problem as if a cable isnt good enough quality to carry a full HDMI signal across its entire length then THEY WONT MAKE A CABLE LONG ENOUGH TO SUFFER SIGNAL PROBLEMS, this is why you'll find the longer cables might occasionally be a little more expensive, as they might be slightly better quality.

The reason I am having this rant is that I was in Comet today and I saw a 6meter HDMI cable for £199.99, OMG!!! I couldnt believe it. Now, granted, not many people are going to need a 6meter cable so they could by the 2 meter cable but that was still £100 (and why does the price DOUBLE for the extra lenght!!). Ebuyer sell HDMI cables that are Gold plated and carry a LIFETIME guarantee for £2.45 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130507 (and this particular cable comes with free delivery), this is a decent cable and will work perfectly, 100% identically to any more expensive cable on all HDMI devices. Ok, its only 1 meter not 6, but if you want a longer cable they do a 5meter one for, wait for it..... £5.55, hardly going to break the bank is it. (they also do a 7.5 meter one for £8.95). I've bought some of these cables and they are VERY good quality, solid cables, so you are definately getting your moneys worth! I really hope people see this as it winds me up SO much that shops can carry on ripping people off and letting them pay HUNDREDS of pounds for a cable that they only need spend a couple of quid on (or should even come free with the TV/Ps3/Xbox/Blu-ray etc). Its criminal, surely someone should be stopping them!! anyway, please if you read this, let people know (ebuyer isnt the only place you can get cables this cheap, its just that I use them a lot).
Well, there we go, Rant over!
  • I wouldn't ever dream of buying into Monster and other 'premium' brands for hdmi cables. The three I have are from Wilkinsons and they are fine.

That's pretty obscene alright. They've been pulling this kind of crap for years. I have a friend who worked setting up sound systems for some very large concerts by well known artists. He was sitting up a large outdoor show, and one of the interconnects he needed had decided not to work, so he went to the nearest place to buy one, which was a branch of Dixons.

He choose the least expensive one he could find that didn't look as though it would break half way through the show or pickup interference from passing taxis.

The guy behind the till said "you'll really notice a big difference with these cables".

My friend said "no I won't".

"Yes, you will. You must not have a good enough sound system. How many watts is it?"

My friend thought for a moment before replying "about 20,000", and then left the store.

Its more expensive on their website.
And you'll need a power cable to power whatever it is you're using that ethernet cable with.

OMG!! And I thought that HDMI cable was obscene, over a grand for a kettle lead, I really, REALLY cannot understand how ANYONE could be stupid enough to buy this stuff. They should use these sort of things as sanity tests, seriously. Even if that power'Kord' is that amazing, what do these people think the wires feeding your mains sockets are made out of? Or do they expect you to take a feed straight off the electricity sub station?!

    The facts wrong im afraid

The reason you cant tell a difference is because your setup is wrong so the tv cant display better pictures no matter WHAT hdmi you use.

Its the basic rule of thumb ~ start at the mains first

I have myself connected qed hdmi (50 quid) a silver....erm...forgets name (85 quid) and an out and out wireworld (better not tell you the price) and on upscaled material (or proper 1080 p) I can easily see a difference between all 3 and the wireworld looks incredible on my pioneer hdtv. Its all down to wether people are prepared to pay to get the best out of what they buy or just USE it

Although theyre all DIGITAL they do in fact (all of them and especially the cheapie ones) lose part of the signal or BLEED into parts of one another. Theres no such thing as a completely clean signal that comes out of one unit and enters the other EXACTLY the same, its down to the quality of the cables.

Its to do with CONDITIONING the mains inbetween the power supply and the unit its going to power. THATS what the mains leads do. It 'cleans' the power supply before running the electrical component (amplifier, tv, whatever) which in tuns makes it sound or look better
