  • If it were me I'd sprinkle some bicarb of soda over it (you can scent this with a few drops of an essential oil and give it a good shake in the tub), leave for a couple of hours, then vacuum it up.

If it's still smelly try spraying it with a solution of white vinegar, water and a few drops of essential oil, chuck some towels down and tread all over it to soak up the moisture. You might want to put the mattress on the floor first though.

    Good luck!

I have a lot of experience in this - what we have done is use a dilute solution of Domestos and then use the trampling on towels to dry it. Then put the protector back on - masks some of the smell until you can afford to replace the mattress. Also if it is a divan bed, check that the bed base doesn't smell as even if you clean the mattress, the base often needs some work.

  • I had this problem with DD2 - I found the bicarb did help but what helped more was taking the matress and putting it out in the garden on a nice sunny day, propped up against the fence, and spraying it with some antibacterial febreeze. It's a bit of a pain dragging the matress outside but it was cheaper then buying a new one!

Just out of curiousity does your son really have three pints to drink because that sounds quite a lot. It may be a good idea to have his urine tested at the surgery if that is the case. Try to avoid sugary drinks as well and stick to water. You can always get a mattress protector at Boots- Primark also sell them for about £5. HTH

  • bicarb of soda mixed with hydrogen peroxide - think its 3 or 5%, available from the chemist, make a paste and pour over spoilt area, leave to dry then hoover off. I used this to get cat pee out of my mattress.. don't ask! anyway it worked a treat... didn't need a new mattress.

My two year old had an accident in her bed...I normally have a waterproof sheet on but it was in the wash. Now I have a very smelly mattress...I have tried baking soda, warm water and soap, but it is not working! Any suggestions?
