  • I think that any newbies on Old Style had found it, used it, and moved on. Perhaps we'll get some new newbies from it's second home

Selling items whether for profit or not does seem to fall more within the remit of ebay and other auctions, this is not just the ebay board after all.

Sometimes threads don't sit easily within any forum, and it has to be considered which is the most appropriate. Since the discussion now covers certificates of posting, seller protection and postage methods I can't see a more suitable board for it than here.

Obviously the moderators have the final say in what goes where so if anyone really objects to it being here they can always ask the mods for a decision. (just click on the triangle symbol on my post).

Otherwise, welcome to the ebay and other auctions forum, you never know ... you start listing a few things on Amazon and before you know it you will be an ebay addict like some of us on here.

  • Hi Soolin, or maybe you will convert to Amazon, where you only pay if you sell!

Alas I rarely sell books or CDs so Amazon not much use for me. I rarely end up with things unsold on ebay anyway, so I'd pay either way.

Amazon does look good though for people who want to upload a whole load of books on the off chance, I've referred several people to the site (and to this thread) so they can make use of it.

It's been a very interesting thread, long may it continue.

  • I think that one of the more interesting posts was this one from Rave who was going through the bags of books put out for the bin men outside charity shops.

That is recycling for the benefit of lots of people.
1 - the buyer of the book, it was obviously wanted and presumably they got it very cheaply.
2 - the seller, he had the chutzpah to go through the bags and gets a few bob for his bother.
3 - landfill or wherever dead books go, I suppose we all gain there.
4 -the shop, presumably they sold some of the books that had been donated with the ones that were put out as rubbish.
5 - the original donator, they have less clutter and know that they have given a little to their chosen charity.

Even though it's a benefit for all concerned I still can't bring myself to do it.....
  • Just another note for anyone that hasn't looked at Amazon yet...they don't just sell second hand books, CDs DVDs computer games etc. I have sold unwanted electrical things too.

I buy all my bubblewrap (for ebay) and bubble envelopes (Amazon) from Viking Direct (link in post 1) and they have very good promotions from time to time, often giving electrical goods as gifts. in the past few years we have had 4 Hinari toasters, 3 Draper electric drills, 4 Vax Baby bubble vacuum cleaners and 2 Hinari cappucino machines. The Vax machines and cappucino machines were all sold on Amazon. I gave away the most of the rest before I realised that I could sell them on Amazon

About an hour or so ago I got an email from Amazon saying that payment for one of my books is delayed and still pending.

First time I've come across this - how does this happen? They suggest waiting 3 days before relisting if payment doesn't follow.

Is there any point in me waiting, surely they would have paid straight away if they really wanted it? Can I relist now or do I have to wait?

    Sorry for all these questions!

(apologies if it's been asked before - I have read the whole thread and don't recall seeing anything about this...)
  • It usually means that there is a problem with the buyers credit card, it may be resolved but often isn't. If you haven't got the go ahead in 3 days you will need to re-list, they don't do it for you.

I had one of these a couple of weeks ago, they never paid, but you still have to wait just in case they pay.
Its a pain having to wait 3 days.

Found 6 books - I say books, they're more like pamphlets, in a drawer yesterday.
I'd had all these books for free from a previous place of work.
    Listed them up on Amazon.
One has sold already for a profit of £5.00+ not bad for a 9 page "book"
