You can cook pretty much anything in a microwave, especially if you have a steamer pot.
I haven't had a 'proper' oven for ten years. I do have two rings, but rarely use them except for stir fries, and also a thing called a Tiny Top (a little mini oven thing costing about £20) which I use for baking or roasting. Might be a bit small for family use though.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
I had only a mw for a while when I moved house once and I was surprised what I could cook in it. Some of the more obvious -
• Chicken portions - a bit pale, so needs some seasoned coating to make it look good, but its very moist when cooked in the mw; I also cooked it in a sauce (jar but you could make your own on the hob?
• Jacket potatoes
• Cakes and puddings are easy in the mw – some cakes may look a bit pale but taste good - you could always ice them or top with fruit etc for a dessert

Slow cooker – casseroles, meat joints, soup, rice pudding, but see the slow cooker recipe thread for loads of ideas - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=1332010#post1332010
I have quite a few recipes for mw cakes and puds so will check them out and see if anything suitable for lunch boxes?
Edited to say, oven chips can be cooked in mw, but they're not so nice as proper oven. Not tried hm oven chips or wedges in mw though.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Whole chicken can be boiled on hob. Meat used in mushroom sauce or whatever.
I have a nice microwave chocolate cake recipe if you are interested. Just let me know. If you alert me via PM and then I'llpost on the board."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Soup is another thing you can do. Also why not double up on portions and then freeze whats left so it can be another meal.0

Loads of casseroles - especially in this weather! Soups too/curry/chilli/omlettes/sweet n sour with rice/bangers & mash/stirfrys/grilled chicken with savoury rice/gammon,mash&veg/chicken chow mein/cooked breakfast style. You can do a joint in the SC.

Hi
My oven has broken, but luckily the hob & grill still work. I was just wondering what type of food to cook. I have planned to make beef stew this week (on hob), carrot & lentil soup & spaghetti.
Ideas & recipes would be great.0 -
Hi silverchair,
The things you have already mentioned are good. I cook soups, stews, one pot meals, potatoes, veg, pasta and sauces on the hob and use the grill for fish and meats that don't need slow cooking. Pasta bakes could be cooked on the hob or in the microwave if you have one and browned under the grill if necessary. Come to think of it I don't really use my oven for much other than roasting, pastry based pies and baking.
