Cheap meals using a microwave, grill and hob?
Comments

Had our gas cut off last night (not for non-payment but because we have a gas leak in the ground floor somewhere!). I managed to cook meatballs and pasta in the microwave but it took forever as they had to be cooked separately. Have now fished out an old camping gas stove with two hobs and wondered if anyone has any easy/interesting recipes for two hobs other than the usual spag bol, chilli and curry? Would be grateful for any replies. I don't have a grill either. I've got some pork mince tonight which I'm thinking of making into a stew and having with boiled new potatoes and microwaved broccoli.0

I love a mince stew and it only takes one pot!
Dry fry the mince (I usually do beef, but I think it should be simialr with pork)
Add a finely chopped onion, and some chopped carrot and fry for another few minutes before adding a dollop of brown sauce or a good splash of worcester sauce and black pepper.
Lower the heat.
Add stock (homemade or cubesx2 dissolved in water)
Add peeled potatoes, more than you think you'll need as some of them will disintegrate.
Leave to cook, stirring every 10 minutes or so.
Real comfort food.

We go camping a lot so do this all the time. You could soften some veg in oil, meanwhile boil some pasta in the other pan. Buy a pasta sauce, add it to the veg and heat through, then add the cooked pasta.
Fajitas, fry some chicken, onion, red and green peppers in fajita spices, add fajita sauce, put a dollop on a tortilla with some grated cheese, guacomole and soured cream and roll up.
I've just made a vegetable chilli in the slow cooker but you could use one pan on the hob. Soften some red and green peppers and onion, add a tin of chick peas, tin tomatoes, baked beans, tin of sweetcorn, tin of red kidney beans, 3 tsp chilli powder, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/4 cup of honey and 1 cup of tomato sauce. (American recipe) We had this with tortillas as they were.
You could also get a disposable bbq, so you could grill some meat. (Use it outside though)“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
More or less anything that can be made in a slow cooker can also be made using one saucepan on a low heat. I make most of my meals using one hob and never put the grill on. You can also buy saucepans with a divide in the middle so you can cook 2 separate things in one saucepan.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Well our oven went on saturday ( won't heat up anymore:rolleyes: ) and it just isn't worth getting it fixed as it looks pretty old, was here when we moved in. We will be building an extension to our kitchen shortly and want to get a range cooker then so we are trying to hold out buying for a couple of months until we know exactly when the extention will be happening.
So that leave me with a hob, mircrowave (just a normal smallish one), grill, oh and the slow cooker to work with. So can anyone give me a a start on a few cheap meals I can make using these. I feal abit lost without my oven as I had got into a routine of baking goodies twice a week for snacks for the boys and something for DH's lunchbox.
Thanks

really silly question, but how do I cook chips without an oven?0 -
Shepeherds / Cottage pie. Stir Fry. Curry and rice. Corned Beef Hash. Pasta and sauce. Meat chops , pots and veg. If I can think of anymore I'll add it to the list. Also if you look at the recipe index there are a lot of slow cooker recipes there.
You can cook chips in a pan that has a lid and put oil in the pan.

Loads of pasta options, omelette, fajitas, casseroles, jacket spuds in the mircowave.
Instead of baking you could do cornflake cakes for lunches or tiffin. I used to make my cornflake cakes a bit more healthy by adding ground almonds and sultanas and making with mainly dark chocolate.0
