I butted in once when a Grannie grabbed and slapped a child who wasn't with her because it had taken a toy off her grandson when they were in the small play area in Adams. I told her she had no right to slap the child as this was just teaching it that violence was ok. All the other parents just stood watching but the parent of the child who had been slapped was no where to be seen.

I think we have a duty to interfere. Look at what happened to Jamie Bulger. If I saw a child in danger or being hit I would ring 999 immediately. A man tried to snatch a 7 year old from my local Tesco and was in the car park before someone stopped him. I wouldn't interfere with adults though - just look as if I was walking on by and calling the police at the same time.

yes poppy i think that's probably what i would do too, call the police discreetly and ask for help from passers by. i know i'm not strong enough to fight anyone off, so attempting it might result in my being unable to call the police and there might not be anyone else around to do it. it would be silly of me to go charging in, get clobbered round the head and result in the police not being called in time :-/
