Help get rid of those middle lane morons on the motorway (petition)

There is no minimum speed limit*, but people can and have been prosecuted for offences such as obstruction of traffic, failing to make good progress, driving without due care etc. etc. If there is no good reason for you not to maintain the posted speed limit, that is the speed you should be travelling at.
Try quoting my whole paragraph next time, not a selectively edited part of it, it then makes sense.
I have never seen anyone prosecuted for " failing to make progress " I think you are getting confused with your driving test.:rolleyes:0 -

Just to ensure you all keep on your toes...lol0 -
Middle lane hoggers dont bug me much, as I can usually undertake with ease, its the way people drive around wombles that get me, as soon as they spot them they slow right down to 55. Look they are not proper cops, they are wombles who close motorways for the slightest fender bender.0

Left lane is for lorries.
Right lane is for BMWs/white vans etc. traveling over 90 mph.
Drive on left lane, every 2 minutes you need to move out to overtake artics.
Drive on right lane. Every 30 seconds you'll be flashed by BMW drivers.
So, where do I drive? Middle lane. Hardly rocket science.

People here are moaning about the middle lane hogger, but frankly 90% of drivers are members of that club, although they pretend that they aren't.
A large part of my lengthy commute is on dual carriageways (both motorway and A road). Normally the left hand lane has only HGV traffic, often fairly well spaced out, and frequently with the next truck on the horizon. Unless there is only a short distance between the trucks I will pull in once I pass.
Does any body else pull in? Of course they don't, they stay fixed in the outside lane, so you have a steady stream of nose to tail of traffic in the outside lane, doing pretty much the same speed as I am. There is no 'slow coach' at the front holding the traffic up in the outside lane, just the road running at maximum capacity.
As mentioned earlier, you should keep left unless overtaking. So why aren't all the people sitting in the outside lane. Because they are all middle (or outside lane) hoggers. If you cannot go past the car in front of you (for whatever reason), then you should keep left. If you don't, you are a middle (or outside lane) hogger, like it or not.
And when I reach the next HGV in the distance, do these middle (or outside lane) hoggers want to let me pull out to overtake it? Of course they don't. The middle (or outside lane) hoggers should realise that every time they make it difficult someone who has pulled in to overtake, they are just recruiting another member to the club, as that person won't pull in next time.
So next time you accuse someone of being a middle (or outside lane) hogger, take a look in the mirror and make sure that you are not a member of the club as well.0 -
thank you altarf.
i drive the M8 between glasgow and edinburgh a lot it is only a 2 lane motorway, at rush hour the left lane has only lorries in it,as you say well spaced out and the right hand lane has cars in it,usually going around the same speed as lorries in the left lane.
it really irritates me,so i do the exact opposite of what you should do,i use the right hand lane to overtake 1 lorry, move back to the left undertake about 8 cars then squeeze back in to the right hand lane overtake another lorry then back to the left again to pass another good few cars, some folk would say (and probably will soon enough) that this is dangerous,crazy,etc... But it is the only way to make any kind of progress on this road....work permit granted!0 -
I don't pull in to with a purpose to undertake, although that frequently happens, but because that's what you should do. I tend to drive around or under the speed limit, but the queue of middle (outside lane) hoggers although they may want to go faster than the speed limit rarely manage it.
Anyway, whatever speed you drive, on my route it doesn't make much difference as there are a few 'pinch points' where the slower traffic catches up with the faster traffic (bar a few car lengths) anyway.
Whatever the circumstances, I find that the outside lane hoggers don't care and try to make it as difficult as possible for you to overtake.0 -

Regarding moving past the queue by using the left hand lane and then pulling back out, most people in the queue would like to do the same thing, but they stay in the queue because they know it irks people.
Back to the original middle lane morons, possibly the worst situation is a MLM plus a driver in the outside lane who is moving at approximately 0.001mph more than the middle lane vehicle. I have seen people pull from the back of an 8 vehicle queue in the outside lane, take the left hand lane, move past both the obstructions and then pull back into the outside lane.Happy chappy0 -

On the journeys I make, more often than not, there is no vehicle at the 'front'. On one stretch the road drops down over an incline for several miles, and then back up the other side. You can clearly see that there is no 'front' to the queue of outside lane hoggers, and yet the inside lane can be empty for a mile.tomstickland wrote: »If you are in such a queue and pull into the middle lane then the vehicle behind just takes your place and when you reach the next obstruction you generally have to pull out behind the vehicle that took your place. Hence why the queue forms.
And if you sit in the queue of traffic in the outside lane with an empty to your left, you are a middle (outside lane) hogger, like it or not.
And if you try to prevent someone overtaking when they have followed the Highway Code by pulling in when there is a decent gap (and I am not talking about people trying to undertake or weaving in and out), then the next time they won't and you have another recruit.0
