I have walked away from cash machines not once but twice, I have a terrible attention span. Both times it was only a tenner- but what made it really irritating is that I remembered within seconds and turned around only to find no sign of my money, and didn't spot anybody making off with it. I was angry with myself, and really angry with the thieving, dishonest b*stards who made off with my cash:mad:.

    .

If you don't take the money within a few seconds, the atm swallows up the money again. It has happened to a couple of friends, one of them forgot twice in one week !

If you go back to the bank, they can do some checks and you get your money

Thinking about it I should have done, but I'm pretty sure that in both cases someone made off with my money rather than the machine swallowing it. The first one in particular I'm 99% certain I saw the guy who took it but just not quite quick enough to see him actually take the cash. If I'd turned around a second sooner:mad:.

Thanks to the people who thanked my previous post:). Honesty is the best policy IMO, it never even occurred to me to keep the money or the razor blades.

Agreed - my brother found a £10 note in Asda once, and instead of pocketing it, went to the customer services desk and handed it in, I think he was worried that it was a little old lady's pension and wouldnt be able to eat or something!! Bless his little heart (he was 15 at the time too - not all teenagers are horrible, but I will accept that most are and my brother is a rarity!) They called him 3 months later though and gave it to him as no-one claimed it. He promptly went and put it in the nearest charity container. He said that he didnt feel right about having it, as most people would have kept the money in the firstplace, so the person that lost it would not have bothered asking customer service as it is unusual to get cash back once its been lost. He hoped that the person who lost their money wasnt too upset about it, and hoped that by giving it to charity then some good luck would happen to the person that lost it!!

    How sweet is that???

I've been outclassed there- I might have handed in the tenner, but I definitely would have spent it on beer once they gave it back to me;).

Very sweet! If only everyone in the world was like your little brother wouldn't it be a better place to live in. :j

I spoke to the manager and was informed that there was a 'problem' with this cashier! He promtly handed over £30 and apologised for the hassle it had caused me. :j
So my instincts were right, the cashier had the money, Bec xx

I think this is terrible, i am sure though that it is only a very small percentage of cashier's that chance this but i am pleased you got your money back. Maybe the checks the stores do on potential work force is not enough, or maybe even spot checks to test the honesty of them. I worked on a till in a suprmarket years ago, i have to say there were no checks done at all, just a quick interview and yes you've got the job. I had a lady come back once and said she'd given me a £20 not and was £10 short in her change. The till was checked immediatley and found to be sopt on to the penny. This lady was actually caught shop lifting in the store 2 days later. She had a baggy coat that she had sewn pockets into the side to collect her taking. Apparently they had been watching her for quite a while but needed enough evidence to prosicute her. There was never any question about the money with me or the till as my till had slways reconcilled to the penny. The lady in question had actually given me a £5 note, i remembered her.

I think that its not hard to forget about your cashback - equally its not hard for the cashier to forget about it - there are no reminders once the till is opened and receipt is printed - so its easy to hand over the receipt and card and forget about the money - i worked in a supermarket as a teenager. However, the OP immediately jumped to blame the cashier 100% -I think she has to take some of the blame herself, if it was me I would just feel really annoyed at myself for forgetting to double check and I would ask the store to reimburse me but I wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that everybody is in the wrong but myself.

I didn't actually immedietely jump to the conclusion that the cashier had pocketed the money, if you read my original post correctly it was posted AFTER I had been back to the store to find out where the money was and I found out that the till balanced. And I was right the cashier had taken the money and I found out today that he has been sacked so I was right :p
