A couple of years ago i was paying for some shopping in my local iceland, the guy on the till was a new employee and when i paid by switch he entered the cheque guarantee value £50 as cashback. I signed it without noticing and was about to leave when he pointed out his mistake. He got a bit flustered and to make it easier for him i just took the money :) but he told me he had been doing it all day and this was the first he'd noticed his mistake. Always wondered how much his till was up at the end of the day and how they sorted it out.

This is one reason why I will not use cashback at tills any more. To much margin for error.

The only two times I used cash back I have had to remind the young men and yes it was young men both times that I had not had my cashback. Both times where in Sainsburys as well.

Most large supermarkets normally have cash machines. I prefer to use them now.

I too have left shopping behind had a few bags with me and just forgot to pick it up. I realised when I got home and they kindly held on to it for me to pick up at a day or two later. My MIL was always doing that when she was able to go shopping at the same store. :rotfl: And yes I am blonde but it is natural.

i remember sara cox even walking away from a cash machine without her money, she said it ages ago on the radio.

it is possible to walk away from the cash machine if people get distracted.....hence why cahspoint thieves are succesful they use distraction most of the time.

I'm sure the OP (or anyone for that matter) is more on-the-ball than Sara Cox!! :rotfl:

Sorry if I didn't make it clear in my first reply but I never said that the OP was !!!!!!. I was giving an example that if someone were to walk away from a cashpoint a few seconds after pressing "Withdraw Cash" and then pressing the amount, they would most probably be !!!!!! :rotfl: In this case I would simply laugh and mock them.

However, in this case it is probable that the cashier was up to no good. It could be that OP simply mislaid/lost the money (more probable as she is a woman :rotfl:). However, from the facts given by the OP, I reckon the cashier made off with it and he/she should be suspended by his/her nostrils from the tallest tree in the kingdom :D

I have walked away from cash machines not once but twice, I have a terrible attention span sometimes. Both times it was only a tenner- but what made it really irritating is that I remembered within seconds and turned around only to find no sign of my money, and didn't spot anybody making off with it. I was angry with myself, and really angry with the thieving, dishonest b*stards who made off with my cash:mad:.

One time I was queweing at an ATM behind a woman who was taking her time and looking a bit confused; it eventually spat out her card and she walked off, whereapon the machine ejected a BIG wad of cash! I quickly chased after her and handed it over, I think she was a tourist, that could have really spoiled her holiday! Come to think of it, I chased the guy who preceeded me at the checkout out of Tescos the other day because he'd left behind a four pack of Mach 3 blades.

I used to work in a shop and can honestly say that I have forgotten to give cahback before, but there was no intention to steal, and always remembered not giving it when they said can I have my money please, its simply going through the motions and forgetting.

Some shop assistants do it on purpose however, a colleague was 'stung' once, as it was suspected that she was pocketing till money from the incidents, and hadnt been caught. they sent in an undercover member of staff from another branch, and told her to request cashback, but be distracted and forget. As soon as she left the shop without the cashback, a till check was performed and the money wasnt there. They called the police, she was searched, and it was found in a secret pocket that she had sewn into the waistband. It had the £10 in there, along with a couple of £2 coins that she later admitted in court was from short changing customers.

There is good and bad, and if you genuinely believe you didnt get your money, either call it in, get cctv etc if they say no, and if you are there, get a manager to till check. Most of the time, my customers have said you forgot the cashback, and I knew instantly they requested it, I put it throught the PDQ machine, but had forgotten. If I was sure I had, or there was dispute, I immediately got a manager to till check, and to check the reciept, because the customer could have forgotten to even request it (it has happened!) or I could have forgotten to put it through.

Still, in these cases, it is always best to get it checked thoroughly as soon as possible, to get your money back, and if the staff member is stealing, they shouldnt be working there. Equally, Id advocate just using the cash machines (pretty much every supermarket has them nowadays) as it saves the bother completely!

  • I too have walked away from a cash point without my money :o I was too busy worrying about an exam I was about to take, however I contacted my bank and they said they would be in touch once they could check, which they did and my money was found, apparently the machine beeps when your money is coming out but the machine will also swallow the money again if it isn't claimed-very lucky no-one was behind me I guess..

Hope you get your money back £30 is a lot to lose.

I always remember one time when I was in town having one of those hell bent drunken evenings.

My friend had gone to the cashpoint and there was a card in it and it was on the screen that asked you how much you wanted to withdraw. We all just looked at each other and in the end it timed out and spat the card out again.

It must have been someone more drunk than me who`d be daft enough to do that !!!!!!

Many thanks to everyone who was kind enough to respond and sympathise with me.
Some good news! I have got my £30 back! :T
I went in the store yesterday to complain that not only had I still not got my money but also no one was calling me back or keeping me informed when promised.
I spoke to the manager and was informed that there was a 'problem' with this cashier! He promtly handed over £30 and apologised for the hassle it had caused me. :j
So my instincts were right, the cashier had the money, I am not !!!!!!, I did not leave the money at the till, it was not stolen from me bag!
So a good ending to the story.
He advised me to remember my cashback next time and I advised him that this would be the last time I got cashback and in future I would use the cashpoint machine!

Congratulations. I have to be honest and say that it is very rare that I actually use cash for anything. Most places take cards these days, and if I have cash I have a bad tendency to spend it. However, your tale will probably result in me triple checking whenever I do get cash...no matter where from.
