I had a similar incident myself at an Asda tobacco kiosk, I only got as far as the carpark and realised I didn't have the cash because my next stop was to be their drivethrough fuel station and went in my wallet to get the cash ready, the exact reason I requested it.

I immediately returned to the store and the assistant said I hadn't asked for cashback, I pointed out to here I had actually asked for £25 and she had told me she could only do £10 denominations so I modified my request to £20 she claimed not to remember so I asked to speak to a supervisor, one of the runners came along and turned to the assistant and asked her to take my name and address and proceded to announce to me that he till would be checked at the end of the shift and someone would call me the next day with the verdict. I told him that, that was not going to happen but that HE was going to get a manager and shut the till down and do a till check there and then or I was going to call the police and report the theft of MY money which he duly did. End of story I got my £20.00 and the assistant was clearly after it for herself as the first till check showed the till even but the second one which included receipts and coupons turned up a £20 folded up into quarters amongst the coupons, I was given no explanation as to why a £20 should be folded in such a way and stowed away in the wrong section of the till and I still see that assistant to this day operating the same till!!

i was in tescos the other day at the CS desk awaiting a refund for my chicken thighs !
whilst i was waiting there i saw a member of staff count out 40 quid put it in an envelope and wrote on it for mrs Smith, she then rang mrs smith to tell her they had her 40 quid and it was in an envelope in the safe if she would like to collect it, now if i had wanted to i could have returned ten minutes later and said i was mrs smith and that my 40 quid was in an envelope in the safe, it isn't a very secure system is it.
    Another day another R&R

Now I know that I haven't got the money and if the till balanced and wasn't over then it must mean that the cashier pocketed my money

Do you not think that this is a bit over the top, you have no way of knowing that you didn't drop the cashback before putting it in your purse/handbag, or that you dropped it on your way out of the shop, or perhaps left it in a pocket of what you were wearing on the day.

It just seems a bit harsh that you are claiming that the assistant must have stolen it when there is even the slightest chance that you mislaid/lost it yourself

I did this once, and didn't notice till two days later - I had requested £20, but didn't need it straight away (I live 18 miles from the shops/cashpoint and it was to save me an additional return journey). I phoned and they checked their records and it was there for me to collect within two hours.

I have to say though, I didn't blame the cashier - we were equally forgetful. Had the till not been up though I might have had a different opinion!

No more retarted than walking away from the shop till without taking the money ... which is rather harsh to the original poster. People DO make mistakes and there's no need to be quite so critical!

I wasn't being critical of the OP - you've just got the wrong end of the stick :rotfl:. I was showing the post which I quoted in my earlier message to be completely wrong. I was backing up the OP in his/her stance that the money was not given.

It is easy to walk away from a cashpoint but when you do that from a till there is someone to shout "You forgot your cash!".

I was not implying the OP was "severely retarted". :p

It would be much better if all shops made you initial the receipt AFTER handing over your money. My local Tesco does this, they write the notes given ie: 2x£10, then you initial it.

Martin started a campaign about this a while ago ... can't remember what the outcome was. The OP has accused Tescos, or at least one of their members of staff, of theft although I wonder how many customers have tried to steal money this way ... by claiming they did not get the money when they actually did?

It is your money you should take more care ... I hope you do get your money back .. but you have to accept a significant amount of the responsibility.

Maybe the supermarkets should simply stop offering this service ... it is obviously causing them grief ... if customers ask for cash back they should just point them to the nearest cash machine. Much simpler and no hassle.

No it is not a bit harsh at all, I was never handed the money, I remember him giving me a receipt and a coupon back that wouldn't scan and that was it.

I don't like being called !!!!!! either. I was shopping on a hot busy day with two young children, it is an easy mistake to make, I came on here for advice not to be insulted.

If the till had been up then it would of been no problem but the till balances so it got 'lost' somewhere between that cashier and the till going to be cashed up. What am I supposed to think?
