I am currently half way through the No Diet Diet - I saw a supplement of part of it in a paper a few weeks ago and thought "I could cope with that, I think." I do think it would be useful for someone who is unhappy as well as overweight - can you order that from the library?

It's also very encouraging in that it says no-one fails on this 'diet', even if we don't complete the four week programme. I can see it wouldn't suit everyone, but it's something you can come back to.

    AND it's not hard ...

I saw a book on the no diet diet in the library and because I hadn't heard of it I didnt give it a second look  :o

How bad is that? Just goes to show what kind of a person I am! easily led by advertising eh!!

My other experience of depression and putting on weight is when you look to food to fill the void. A void created by frustration and feeling in a rut or cheering yourself up with food as a reward for getting thro the day.

I find depression and weight gain go hand in hand

I find it relates to how often you can goto the loo properly. I started to put on weight when I couldn't go properly, so I find constipation is a contributory factor to weight gain which is related to depression.

You are absolutly right, I am a prime example of this.

But I am going to change that!!! I hope

Re: going to the loo properly, I found it difficult to go when there were lots of people in the house. I also have trouble going when I am out as noise puts me off. It also makes me very tired, so tend to hold it to stop myself getting tired as it doesn't mix with the people I live with or eat loads to regain my energy, which in turn makes me want to go again.

Sorry if this sounds like too much information but I was really skinny once and started to put on weight when I had trouble going to the loo and getting into this cycle.

Right now I would like to live alone away from noise and others putting pressure on me to feel good all the time.

  • Today I think I should patt myself on the back lol

I have been out of the house for 5 (five) yes I did type 5 hours!!

I have been for a walk up the moors where nobody knows me or can talk to me there, of course hubby was with me too as I am scared of being on my own at the moment, I will overcome this in time too but one step at a time I am told.

Anyway we walked for about 4 of those hours and I went Into the library!! That was scary. people look at you, it was quite hard not too run out and hide back in the comfort of my car but I stuck it out for 10 mins. gonna try for longer next time.

Anyway In a nutshell I feel quite good at the moment, altho that does change minute to minute. or if someone knocks the door or if the fone rings. But for now I am ok. I have cut out all the crap I have been snackin on and on Friday I am hoping to start a diet. Slimming World is looking good so far. But I have to say, it does seem a little unreal that I can eat all that food!!! I suppose u could say I am still old school where diets ment u ate lettuce leaves all day.

Must work on my way of thinkin too lol :-)

Well done!! This is a LOT of walking for your first day, I think you might be fitter than you said!! I just had 2 x 40 min walks (to and from a meeting) and I'm pooped :) And one step at a time is absolutely right, it's just a case of increasing your comfort zone day by day. I remember a time too when I was scared of all sorts of things that now I wouldn't even give pause to think about....you will get there!!

On the food my solution is not to keep snack food in the house. I appreciate nooneisperfect's comment about one bag of crisps at a time but realistically I know I wouldn't do this :o so I just don't have them and try not to think about them.

And I have only managed recently to properly train DH that talking through the bathroom door is NOT appreciated ;)

Well done Lisa! I'm going to enjoy keeping tabs on you in this thread. :)

In my first week of Slimming World I lost a stone. I was peeing every hour! Must have lost all the weight running up and down to the loo. :D I didn't feel as if i'd lost a pound, so I was quite wary of going to my first weigh-in.

    I need to go back.

edit: I've just found my nearest class, and it's on a Monday. If I went to the next class that would be my 40th birthday. Ooh, life begins and all that. It's maybe karma lol

I can do that? Can u use join online or does it have to be the "meetings" dont think I can do that just yet :-(

    Thanks, Lisa.

if you are able to get to your gp, ask them as i am not too sure. Or maybe phone your gp if you would rather not speak face to face. Hopefully they will be supportive and give you advice

    :)
  • Common Jackieb You can do it too!! You can do it with me! hehehe!

Ive had chinese Vegies and noodles for tea with a sauce (home made) taking my callorie count to a whopping 325cals for 2plates. It isnt a Slimming World meal. but i couted the callories to so today I will have anymore than 1000.

Downfall at the moment is caffine - I have 2 sugars in my coffee :-|

  • I do also think that since the OP mentioned depression exercise will also be really important to make her feel better.
I agree absolutely that exercise helps depression. There is no doubt about that whatsoever, but I make the point to prevent people having unreasonable expectations with regard to exercise and it's potential for causing weight loss.

It can be depressing going to the gym or otherwise flogging yourself to a state of exhaustion week after week only to find it isn't having the dramatic effect on your weight problem.

Body weight is regulated homestatically in that energy intake and expenditure are very much dependent variables - they are linked so that a change in one forces a corresponding change in the other and energy storage (fat) is determined biologically within a certain range set by the interactions of the genes and environment.

To understand how the law of energy conservation, calories in = calories out applies in practice, you have to recognise that increased energy expenditure will induce a compensatory increase in intake or hunger will result. If you decrease your calorie intake that will induce a compensatory decrease in energy expenditure via physical activity or a slowing of the metabolism.
