I find depression and weight gain go hand in hand

I find it relates to how often you can goto the loo properly. I started to put on weight when I couldn't go properly, so I find constipation is a contributory factor to weight gain which is related to depression.

  • Slimming world sounds like it would work for you, red/green days or both. I never feel hungry, can eat lots of good food, it makes you look at your eating habits, i loved white bread, cheese, pasties, etc, etc, and i know full well thats what made me fat in the first place !

I can still have my chinese takeaway on a sat pm, and eat normally whithout having to say "im not allowed that", you can eat anything as long as you work out the "syn" value, but beleive me at 15 syns a day, that packet of crisps isent worth it at 9 syns for a normal bag of crisps, when beef chow mein on a green day is 8.5 syns, i know what id rather eat as a treat !

Its limiting fats and sugars that seem to be the key for me, as i say its really easy, and the meals fit around my family as well.

Maybe have a look on e-bay for the packs, and if you need any help, please feel free to pm me, if i can help you at all i will.

Theres also a slimming world thread on here, really helpful and offers brilliant support.

Im determined to lose me weight, I also have about the same as you to lose (i hide it well,as im tall !!) but find losing steadily has boosted my self confidence no end, ive gone down 2 dress sizes already, so the exercise is helping me lose inches as well as pounds.

    Good luck whatever you decide

The Diet Delusion: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Loss and Disease is well worth studying. I've still got a couple of hundred pages to read but since I altered my diet to severely reduce the carb element I've lost 10lbs which is pretty good going for 2 weeks, especially as I don't feel hungry and have lost the craving for food & alcohol. I'm not doing the Atkins type regime but basing my diet on this Lowcarbohydrate Diet. For Weight Loss and Good Health.

I guess in terms of dieting I think there's a certain amount of truth that you probably eat a bit more when you exercise. However in terms of how you appear exercise certainly helps. To illustrate, I have a pair of trousers that (when I wasn't exercising) were impossible to wear at 12 stone since I couldn't sit down in them :). I am now a bit over 12 stone and they fit well. So the fact that I'm exercising means that although I weigh roughly the same, I fit into slightly smaller clothes.

I do also think that since the OP mentioned depression exercise will also be really important to make her feel better.

I do think you're probably right on carbs though. Not on all carbs but on the white bread and white pasta type carbs which are really just sugar in another form much as I love them. This relates to CCStar's point as well, this kind of diet also lacks fibre which is another important element.

Guess it's all related really :) but I stand by the importance of exercise. It makes life seem better. You feel better about everything. Even taking out any benefits for weightloss it's still good for both physical and mental health.

How are you getting on OP?
  • Hi Belfastgirl I am going to have a look at the link you gave later.

You can be referred to slimming world by your gp, and it is paid for 12 weeks.

good luck with whatever healthy eating plan you choose to follow :)
