i am reading this thread with interest as we also have plans to replace my kitchen, seems wickes is the way to go & must be done before 21/02 to avail the discount. We are keen on robust line so would appreciate if someone could make a recommendation(s).
  • We just ordered out kitchen from Wickes and were very pleased with the all round experience. People I know have also ordered them recently and were very pleased.

They didn't have a great selection of worktops though. Anybody know where I can get good quality, good value wooden ones ?

    Thanks

I agree about the worktops, Wickes didn't have a great selection to choose from imo.

I dont want to spend huge amounts on granite or corian or some other really good worktop as I just cant afford it at the end of the day, so I'm just looking to get some sort of laminate. (Budgets suck! :()

My way of thinking is I can always replace the worktops in the future if need be.

I trawled round Wickes, B&Q, Homebase, MFI etc etc today just looking at worktops and they really are all much and such when it come to laminate. Same thickness and pattern, just different name.

I'm considering one of the textured ones you get now (a bit like riven slate) but I'm not sure how practical they'd be for cleaning, they might hold the dirt more because of the texture? Or maybe I'm just being overly analystic (is that a word?). Also the joins might show more?????? Think matching wallpaper, lol.

I thought about looking online, but so far, everything I have seen looks different in the flesh compared to the way it did in a picture so I'm a bit put off.

To be honest, I'm rapidly losing the will to live and I wish someone would post what worktop/sink/tap/hob/oven/hood they bought as my head is now in bits!

Also, after comparing the cost of buying the same appliances online with the Wickes cost for these (even after discount) they were about £500 cheaper online so don't just assume a discount makes them a good buy.

However, one thing I do know.......I'm getting the Wickes Calgary....definitely. (I think)

    :D

Btw....Ikea do really good quality and good value for money wood worktops.
  • Yes we had the Wickes Kitchen designer round tonight - seemed v efficient and organised. Think we are going for Calgary too! Though frustrating that we can't fit more units in our small kitchen. I got them to quote for a basic laminate worktop - but will probably find something else myself from somewhere else. Would love granite -- but would have to be cheap -- does granite and cheapness ever go together??!!!

We got the space cream kitchen from (GLENDEVON CREAM) howdens (MFI have it too)they did us a free computer generated drawing and the units are ready assembled and extras available off the shelf. I did buy the handles from MFI though as they are chunkier and add to the overall look.

I sourced my own appliances and we bought our black sparkly quartz worktops from a local stonemason, our builder fitted the kitchen. So the kitchen firm quoted us £15,000,doing it as above it cost us around £8,000. it is not an easy process though.

I nfact my husband has orders to shoot me if I mention another home improvement!!!we did have structural work done too though.

I was told by my carpenter that Howdens is the same kitchen as MFI with different names. They (Howdens) were also willing to match MFI prices for the carpenter. I bought my kitchen from IKEA and am thrilled to bits with it, it is a very good quality and the carpenter who fitted it was also impressed. I especially liked that I could buy other bits eg shelves and tables that matched at Ikea I had the oak Tidaholm kitchen. Hope you get sorted soon its worth waiting for.
  • I love my wickes kitchen, had to get the cheaper range, spent £300 inc discount, already had appliances, saved on fitters, sister in law and i fitted it ourselves, dad came and cut work top, then we fitted that and finally...... we tiled it ourselves. And if i say so myself it looks fab:beer:
soz forgot, its been in for about 3 yrs now and its fine nothing broken!
:D I know i'm in my own world~it's ok they know me here!!! :D
:) "It will be fine" quoted by ....me :)

I should also have said that Ikea worked out much cheaper too, and I liked the way I could just buy an extra door later to put in the adjoining dining room to make a matching fitted cupboard and I could go and get extra end panels for similar things I hadn't thought about and buy more shelves or less shelves than they supplied. We also made a fireplace mantel piece in the same oak shelf stuff.
  • i'm in the process of buying a new kitchen. so far i've bought:
    - zanussi fan oven and gas hob £229 on sale at focus
    - chrome mixer tap from ebay £19.99 (same one £80 in shops)
    - s/steel splashback £35 ebay (£69 in diy shop)
    - s/steel chimney hood zanussi £28 ebay (£133 retail price)

i have nearly decided on units. either gloss white or shaker beech.
it will either be from wickes takeaway range or homebase (2 wks delivery)
howdens aren't really that cheap even with the discount. the only affordable ranges were the cheap looking ones.

so i'm deciding whether to get monza or shaker beech from homebase, or houston from wickes take away range.

only problem with wickes take away is they only do a small selection of unit sizes, so i will compromise my design. whereas homebase do a lot more units, which fit in my kitchen perfectly, maximising the space. only prob with homebase is its a bit more expensive and waiting for delivery.
